Tiling over gyprock ?

Hi All,

This is a totally unrelated question about astronomy.

I'm in the finishing stages of renovating an old WC. I've relined an old brick wall with gyprock. I'm planning to tile the bottom 1/2 of the wall with porcelain tiles.

Do I need to prime the bare gyprock with anything before I tile over?
Eg, bondcrete, undercoat or can I leave it as is and just use the appropriate tile adhesive?

NB: This is NOT a wet area hence I did not use fibre cement sheeting.

I've checked multiple tiling dyi forums, but getting mixed responses.

Tiling directly over gyprock is OK. Be sure to apply a sealer/undercoat first to stop the tile adhesive drying out too quickly.
Use a flexible tile adhesive.

Usually wall tiles are put up with a mastic, ABA mastic in a yellow drum will do nicely.
The onlyndownside to not putting cement sheet on top of the gyprock up is if you ever retile it you have to replace the gyprock plaster. Assuming the gyp rock plaster is either the green or the brown variety..... And although you could apply a sealer over it I've never seen any tiler do it yet, never seen them acid wash concrete prior to starting, although if you are using a tile on timber product for floors, that I would prime.

Non porus tiles laid on a non porus surface you would use a different glue, because mastic pretty ,much works by evaporating/ drying, I have heard of problems when used in that configuration. If you want to do that use something like Ardex X77 this will tile over glass metal , just about anything, ok in a wet environment so much so it can be used to tile swimming pools. Although in this case the gyp rock would dissolve if it was wet.
