Problems with iTunes 10 on Windows
If you use iTunes with an iPod on XP (and maybe other Windows versions) do not upgrade to v10 without reading this first.
The iPod service in 10.0.0.68 is broken and will not start. This means you can not sync your iPod. Apple have not yet released a fix for it.
I know these instructions work because I have just done it myself.
Before installing v10 back up the "\program files\ipod" directory.
Install v10.
Click the "Ignore" button for the "iPod Service failed to start".
Rename or delete "\program files\ipod".
Restore your backed up version.
Start iTunes
If you have already upgraded and don't have a copy of v9, there is a link in the discussion above to FileHippo where you can get 9.2.1

Hmm.. as the link states, v10 works flawlessly (thankfully) on OSX 10.6.x, as expected. I imagine an update will follow in days if not hours. Most probs seem to occur on XP SP3. Although not a modern OS, it's still not that old, and will be around for a while. I agree that Apple probably needs to exercise more care in regression testing.

Reading some other threads it appears that this has been broken for a while in prerelease versions of v10, and some people have started comparing Apple to M$ with regard to lack of care in testing.

OSX is, at least, under their own control. Windows is not, especially older and well-patched versions such as XP. Apple is starting to amass a fairly extensive software portfolio, so I guess with that will come oversights now and again.

No - 10.0.0.68 is still the current installer.
One thread said they were calling an entrypoint in ntdll.dll which does not exist in XP. It does exist in Vista v1 and Vista v2 (aka Win7).

mmm, I upgraded to V10 (3gs) with Win 7 yesterday . It trashed the iphone so hard I couldnt even turn it off . Took 2 hrs searching how to hard reset and get it to recover to factory setting and install the backup. The iphone is great until something, anything, goes wrong, then its a nightmare, always.
As far as testing and fixing goes, there is a stupid simple bug since V1, still in V10 that makes it impossible to delete emails, the work around is daft, would take 10mins of recoding to fix.
The reluctance to fix even the simplest bugs, which are serious if you dont know the work around, makes you wonder about Apple philosophy generally. And the insane lack of live, in-device help (simple how-to messages for instance) on very non intuative (and theres lots) operations is frustrating.

This is funny, and so sad. Here I am, in the mood for a bit of music, off to itunes for a Powderfinger Album, willing to pay. After loging in crap, money in the account, required album advertised, good price. On clicking download,....."not available"?, wha, a download is not in stock?. You have to be KIDDING.
Soo, click the album name in google, 5mins and one click download later, albums in my iphone, free, no login-password-money bother.
Wake up Apple, this kind of action is so typical.

Hey Leon,
Did you try the suggestion taxman gave above about proxy settings? It might help.
