Has anyone had this happen

Our adsl router showed we were still connected to the internet but our mail and browser connections wouldn't work so I tried pinging websites using their name like www.google.com.au and I could ping them so DNS was working. But all graphical connections failed the problem was with my provider because after contacting them about the problem it was fixed with no changes on our side I just wondered if any knew what could cause this when I still had connection with ping but no action with browser and email.

At a guess, and it's only a guess, they must have closed a heap of ports.

Since they fixed it quickly and didn't charge you, probably a misconfigured firewall/router on thier part.

I occasionally have a similar problem where our pc's say we are connected with excellent signal strenth yet when we try to connect it says we are not connected.
We pull the plug on our router, wait a few mins re plug in and that usually fixes it.

Cheers Daniel.

Your ISP may be using a transparent proxy. I know mine does. They route http (not https) through their proxy so they can reduce their incoming traffic and provide faster response for pages and images, cached until they expire. If it stops working and they don't have an automated bypass, you get no web stuff.
