Another DSLR cooling option

Hello all...
Found this on my travels...

?? could be the future for warranty maintained DSLR cooling ??
It looks huge too! But, carbon fibre... so may be lightweight!
This is getting ridiculous!!!!

I am sure there will be customers for this...
Sometimes people have lots of money, but no clue what to do with it.
Box made of styro-foam is good enough for me.

Also, how does one frame and focus etc then try to attach the rear part of the box in the dark???

That's what LiveView gives you. You will need to trade-up

I have LiveView thankyou very much!!!

It doesn't work with a bloomin' great box over the LCD screen!!!

USB Cable Ma'boy, USB cable.

Why squint at the little 2.5"-3" screen. I plug mine into my computer and use my 12" laptop screen. Saves me crawling under the scope like a contortionist.

Yeah, live view on a 12", with zoom, is a focusing dream, even beats an AstroCCD for speed, albiet manual.

That box is cool (pun?), but all up with a DSLR gets too close to a CCD price wise. And the 25 deg delta aint that flash. But then again, you get much bigger res and FOV than a CCD for less all up money.

Then you get serious and blow WF away and do NF/hi QE with a smaller CCD for the same money

But, you cant zoom on a star to 10x with the laptop - wish you could!

Agreed - does 25 degrees delta mean that there's a possibility of a temp gradient throughout the box of anywhere between 25 to -25 degs?

I've been checking out the new SBIG 8300 CCD in both mono and colour formats for my widefield stuff. It looks to be both expensive and frustrating!! The mono option which I would love in a perfect world is very costly - add filter wheel and colour/NB filters!!! OSC doesn't appeal (but much cheaper) so much as even with my modded 40D I can do NB imaging of sorts with my clip in Ha and OIII filters. A cooled DSLR is looking more appealing even though I know that a CCD would be the eventual/ preferable goal!

PS...How quickly and accurately can you focus with CCD software?

I still like the Central DS DSLR cooling mod in that the camera and all functions are accessible outside of a box - I'm old school!

I am curious they mention a patented design, but I thought patent are only provided if nothing similar can be made easily. From the forum posts here cooling boxes are quite commonly made.

I live view on the screen using the x10 zoom feature, although still use the computer rarely.

On the DSLR LCD I "LiveView" at normal mag, 5x and 10x. The software seems to have 2 un-named modes with my 40D - normal mag and (what I assume to be)5x only - I hope I'm missing something.

Perhaps it's the Carbon Fibre Box !!?? Not sure - but you're correct, it's basically a hi tech cooler as discussed here and other forums.
I have been led to believe by trawling the web, that the most efficient way to cool a DSLR is by the cool finger directly around the sensor method as opposed to cooling the air around the camera body.

Well, if you insist on WF, then a CCD will be expensive and a cooled DSLR is a viable alternative, with a LOT of effort ("easier" is a myth IMO, for a given quality pic).

Swapping clip-in filters is a pain too.

S/H St8/10s etc pop up occassionally, but they are relitively low res.

Focus with Focusmax, once set up on an autofocuser, is in the order of 20 secs.

I've been looking at the SBIG ST8300 with its full frame sensor...

But it creeps towards 5K with a set of decent filters/wheel and adapters - friggin' silly money for an "entry level" CCD!! The OSC rules out NB stuff too! I think I'm repeating myself now!!

Swapping the filters aint too bad! Unless you're wearing gloves!!

Doug,

I use EOS Utility to go into LiveView. Drag the little white rectangle over an area you wish to magnify and then double-click it. Then, you'll get another option to blow up by 200%. This reduces the frame rate to the laptop screen a little bit, but, you can make very, very precise focus adjustments. It's what I used to do all my focusing on the ED127 and 40D.

Yes, thats what I meant by zoom, its very cool and fast.
