Hello,
Does anyone know if it is possible to watch TV programs online?

Can I look up a program such as Big Bang Theory and watch it on the comp for free?

Sure. Get yourself a USB Dongle, PCI, or PCI-E HDTV Tuner and you'll have HDTV playing on your Computer.
Don't even need the internet to watch TV on your PC.

As already mentioned you computer can become a TV if you have a TV card or the plug in USB dongle but I think you are refering to a store of programs on line.

There are a lot of ABC and SBS programs available on line. I don't know much about it because I would rather watch the main TV, but I have looked at some of the past ABC "Collectors" programs which are available on line.

Hi Frank

If you want to watch and record free to air TV on your computer, it is a relatively easy and cheap task.

I fitted a dual tuner DVB (Digital Video Broadcast) PCI card into our desktop computer so I can watch one channel whilst recording another, or watch one channel with another channel displaying as a smaller window – called “picture-in-picture”.

Mt DVB PCI card is some 3 or 4 years old now and I made sure that I got one that does all the processing via hardware on the PCI card, so that the CPU on my PC is not doing the work in software.

Prior to my dual channel card I had a single channel card and the processing was done via software and as I only had a P4 1.8 GHz CPU, it would occasionally stutter and I had to either watch TV on the computer of use the PC as a PC – not both at the same time.

With my current Dual Tuner PCI card I can use the PC as normal and watch TV in a smaller window, whilst also recording another station.

Of course I rarely do this, as there just isn’t that much good stuff on these days! You will need another aerial to connect to the TV card. We are fortunate in that our study window looks out onto the TV masts of all the broadcasters in line-of-sight, so an indoor aerial is sufficient to give me a strong signal, despite the dual tuner “splitting” the one aerial signal input to feed each tuner.

When I record a TV program, the file size is around 1.5 GB for 60 minutes of recording in Standard Definition.

The picture and sound quality is excellent and you are not chewing up bandwidth as you would do if you downloaded the programs.
