AAQ's new venue

The AAQ have enjoyed a long and successful history with the Brisbane Planetarium, but finally had to admit that we have out grown their theaterette.

Tonight was our inaugural meeting in the Physics Department of the University of Queensland at St Lucia. Over 50 members and guests enjoyed an action packed meeting in extremely luxurious circumstances.

Many thanks go to the Planetarium for looking after us in the past, and to the UQ for this fabulous, and very hi-tec facility.

We now have plenty of room for our welcome guests!

Looks a step up from the old scout hall.

Cheers

Looks impressive but the projection was not as good as before and the seating
which looks good was decided uncomfortable abfer a short time, I shall bring
a cushion next time, Gerald.

Looks like to me you have come a full circle.
When I joined the AAQ in 1986 it was at the same place.

Gerald, you are right about those chairs - they are a bit light on the padding. And I think that we still have a lot to learn about that dual screen projector system!

Ron and David - Its good to keep moving; and Ron, since you know where we are, it's about time you visited again! (and yes, my visit to Cambroon is WAY overdue too)

Ahhhh, chairs in a university lecture theatre are designed to be uncomfortable to prevent snoozing by the students.

Is this lecture theatre in the Parnell Building on the Great Court? If so, it looks nothing like the Parnell Building I remember from my uni days? Is the Pitch Drop Experiment still in the foyer?

Cheers

Hi David, Yes indeed, it is the main lecture theatre in the Parnell, and is really very new! Feel free to pop along and take a trip down memory lane and talk astronomy

I'm afraid I have been so busy with organisational matters that I have yet to explore all the goodies in the hallways..

The Pitch Experiment used to be in a cabinet in front of the door to the main lecture theatre. That theatre was one of the really old theatres with quite a steep slope. From memory it also had a Juliette balcony high above the stage - might have been for mad physicists to drop things from during lectures.
