Super Bowl Sunday!

Not sure if there are any "grid iron" (American Football) fans on IIS or not. Regardless, it is a big event here in the USA...the Indianapolis Colts v the New Orleans Saints.

It should be a great game and it sure will be a great spectacle to watch. I am quite excited to see it as it was one of the things I really missed while in Oz (I used to take the day off to watch) but since the TV commercials are part of the "event" and are not shown outside of the USA it was never quite the same.

I grew up near Indianapolis but never really bonded with the Colts (although they have a fine team)...I am barracking for the Saints. Their quarterback went to the same University that I did (Purdue University) and he is a really good guy to boot.

I've got all the snacks and drinks ready to go just waiting for Sunday evening and the kick-off.

Adrian, the ABC used to replay it (I recall the Late Don Lane hosting it). Has that ended?

I am starting to like the occasional "College" match on the One HD channel, here. I know that College is a different to the National League, but it is a good insight into the game and culture.

Scott (or anyone else who may know), can you clarify something? I thought the NFC and the NFL played independantly throughout the year and the winner in each competition were the teams which played off in the Superbowl, but I inderstand this has changed???

Scott, enjoy the Superbowl, mate. I know it's a big thing!

The NFC and the AFC are the two conferences that make up the AFL. The two Champions from each conference play in the Super bowl.
Haven't followed NFL for a few years, buit back when I did each team played the other teams in its Division (there are 3 divisions per conference) twice during the season with the remainder of the games being against teams from other divisions and I thought there were 1 or 2 games against teams from the other Conference each year, but I could be wrong.
Makes the ol' AFL (Aussie version) seem very simple!

Hahaha, I've got all the pleasures in life at the moment.

Shuttle Launch at 04:39am Sunday Morn, Super Bowl Sunday arvo and a plane to New Orleans on the Monday.

All I can say is I hope "Who Dat Nation" (New Orleans Saints) wins, otherwise the plane to New Orleans will be miserable.

I have just searched ABCTV but cant find reference.
I think they stopped showing the Superbowl when Don passed away.

Adrian

PS I think the Colts will win 28-19

Sounds great Scott! I'm somewhat of a Raiders fan myself (have managed to watch one or two games on One HD... LOL). Hope you enjoy Sunday and let's hope the Saints go marching in!

Cheers
Wade

Hi Scott,

Hope you enjoy your big day mate!

I'd think that most Aussies, if given the choice, would probably support the Saints too -- given that we generally love an underdog and as you know, and the Saints have a long history as also-rans. This is their first superbowl in a +40 year history.

I take a passing interest in NFL. It is interesting to watch though vastly different from Rugby. I do follow the Packers (a team steeped in history), though they went out of the play-off's early.

Have a great time!

Best,

Les D

I see it's on One HD Monday live at 9:30am - 2:00pm then replayed at 5:40pm Monday evening - check your local guides though.

I hear "The Who" are playing at half time - love the who, my favorate band of all time - Quadrophenia, Tommy, etc - fantastic. Saw them in Melbourne and when they came to Adelaide - I'll be watching just for this (if they show it).

Think and hope it will be a shoot out.
Seeing as my miserable Bills dont know what playoffs are anymore I have lost interest in recent years, but have rekindled it somewhat this year.
Will be going for the comeback kid and passing machine in Drew Brees and his Saints

Travesty. Nonsense. Rubbish!!!

The 'Colts' belong in Baltimore!!!!

50/50. I haven't followed NFL for a while as coverage here and the UK is pretty bad, but gut feeling says Colts with a 3 point spread.

PS. Raiders Forever!!!!

That is why I have not "bonded" with them...I still remember them as being from Baltimore too.

I find the skill set similar but the training and pace of the game are really different.

Grid Iron is really a game about "quickness and explosiveness"...quick off of the ball, a fast step and explosiveness through the point of contact...short bursts of power.

Rugby to me is more about momentum and continuity (I should clarify and say Rugby Union) over a sustained period...it is relentless.

I've often thought that a first rate rugby union side could be put together from a good NFL defensive side...Defensive Ends, Linebackers and Defensive Backs. Wouldn't that be a great thing to see?

Pretty close...a good explanation here on wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Football_League

Over time the divisions and conferences have expanded...
