NGC2264 with Mak/Newt

Thought I would image Cone area also, have taken this before but was always a bit disappointing.I like this one a bit more but could use even more imaging time. Taken with Orion 190 Mak/ Newt with qhy9 and eq6 mount. Ha =2 hrs rgb all 1hr each

Nice mate.. great focus and guiding, I really like the framing, letting the blue reflection area of the nebula take a more "center stage" than the cone.

It could probably use some selective noise reduction in the dimmer areas, or more exposure to up the S:N R.

Great going.. I fear I missed this target this year, I dont see myself getting enough time to do a decent image of it until next season now..

coming along nicely Ken, doesn't this one ttake some exposure time to get a half decent image..... I recall an image posted by Martin Pugh some time ago and how much exposure that required.

Keep at it Ken, easy enough to add more exposure.

Great image of a great object. I tried this with my ED127 and it didn't quite work out.
Your guiding and focus is impecable.

Thanks for the replies Alex, Douge, Lester, Marc and Frank. This object demands long exposures to coax out the background detail so its back to the scope to get a few more hours of data.

The nebula is very evident - and that is good for this target! I tried once and it was dim dim dim! Nice going.

The Cone Nebula is an H II region in the constellation of Monoceros

did you use a Ha filter

Thanks David and Trevor yes there is 2 hours of Ha in there already, no o111 in this I guess just H11 emission and reflection areas. With a bright moon nearby tonight and plenty of scattered clouds only option I have is more Ha subs.

Hi Ken,

Very nice widefield image (at least relative to the big scope!). I like the star colours which have come out very well and some great detail in there.

Good to see the mak-newt getting a workout. Its a great performer.

Be interesting to see what a little extra data adds.

A nice job, a bit dark around the edges but the central area of the image shows some nice colours and details, maybe you could crop out the dark outer areas?

Ken - were you using an IR filter by the way? Just noticing some of the faint halos around the stars. Ran into this problem from a filter that did not remove IR resulting in some out of focus IR. It corrected with the addition of an IR filter. Just wondering.

Maybe its something else but dont remember seeing it on your QHY8 images.

A beaut shot though.

Thanks Mike for your reply, maybe dark around the edges from misalignment of various stacks taken over various nights should have spent more time getting things registered. David yes the halos are from the Ha filter, I have a IR/ UV filter in front of the filter wheel but it does nothing to help with the halos might have to spend more on something better. I pushed the levels a bit increasing the blue so here it is again.

Hi Ken,

Why not have a go with the UHCS in front of the narrowband filters. These narrowband filters do look reflective - perhaps it is bouncing back off the filter onto the back of the IR filter? The UHCS might let through less of the "non-narrowband" light frequencies that you are not really interested in.

Just something you might like to experiment with.

Yes there might be a easy way out of this, I tried placing the Ha in the nose piece of the OAG increasing the distance. The results were fainter halos but still there, not sure about the UHCS filter. I have a 40nm Ha that is not mirror coated may be it could be placed between the 13nm Astronomic and the ccd.
