I try to avoid using 316 (difficult when you build devices for underwater use!), but when I have to, I keep the machining to the minimum possible, and pay a machine shop tons of money to do it!

Sorry, not much help, but 316 is a PITA.

Cheers,
Jason.

I'm out of touch with machining, but I got this:

Quote:
Machinability
316 stainless steel has good machinability.
Machining can be enhanced using the
following rules:
􀂋 Cutting edges must be kept sharp. Dull
edges cause excess work hardening.
􀂋 Cuts should be light but deep enough to
prevent work hardening by riding on the
surface of the material.
􀂋 Chip breakers should be employed to
assist in ensuring swarf remains clear of
the work
􀂋 Low thermal conductivity of austenitic
alloys results in heat concentrating at
the cutting edges. This means coolants
and lubricants are necessary and must
be used in large quantities.

My old mans a retired Marine engineer and more than once has made a similar comment.. is there a reason you have to use 316.. instead of brass or aluminium ?

Weight it's for the counter weight shaft

something as heavy non corrosive and easier to machine will suffice

Brass tarnishes, and aluminium corrodes, and both are very soft. I use aluminium for underwater housings, but I get it hard anodised, which changes the surface structure. Hard anodising as you would expect hardens the surface, and also renders it non-conductive to electricity. But, if you want something really hard, and really corrosion resistant, it's hard to go past a stainless such as 316.

Cheers,
Jason.

Hi,

You could try machining grade 303 or 304. Corrosion resistance is a little less, but may be still OK in a countershaft.

Ugima 303 is the bullant's pants:
