What is the distance that comes up on some users?

Hi all,

I may have missed something over the past few months, but notices that many users have a distance in kilometres that comes up at the top right corner of their posts.

I did see it once on my posts, but its not there now.

What is this distance to or from?

Thanks.

If both you and the poster have the geographic location in their profile it works out the great circle distance.

Some people tell the truth about their location. You can put the co-ords in Google maps or Google earth and point straight at them.

Some like me tell the truth but restrict the accuracy. You can get withing a Km or so.

Others can be rather more "imaginative". A certain person who shall remain nameless says they are in Sydney, but the distance from here comes up as hundreds of Km, which is clearly bunk.

I personally haven't set my coordinates in the user CP so the distance appears unrealistic - I doubt this person you refer to is being "imaginative", rather just maintaining their privacy or doesn't see the point in broadcasting their exact location.

There's a difference between you putting 0deg E 0deg N and people who put something that puts them a few hundred Km from the place name.

I have a "fuzz factor" of a few Km. If I lived on a country property that would not be enough. In a city it is.

Not really a big deal, is it? I'm in Sydney. That's all you need to know. It's none of your business exactly which part of Sydney I live in.

Exactly the reason why my coordinates aren't set.

I cant understand why everybody wants to be so secretive these days. My location is Burpengary, and if you are really bothered to find out where that is,well jolly good luck to you . My forum name wont help you locate me, and if you really wanted to contact me, then there is the PM system. Of course if you wish to commit a burglary to steal my LB 12" or Celestron 120 XLT, or even my pianola piano, then beware, cos in my backyard are two killer chooks, AND a ferret with a wooden leg

the last person who jumped over the fence is still in hospital

Well, according to the distance measurement I'm getting, you must be down one helluva deep hole.

Hi Jimmy, Wade & All,

The rake,

This is intriguing, Wade's distance shows as 16,496 kms.

My first line of defence is my nosy neighbours. Not that I mind we all have each other's phone numbers.

The second line is two dogs. They are trained to growl if an intruder tries to break in. If the intruder continues the dogs bark continuously. Visitors are always safe if they just go to the door.

The dogs will bark on command as well.

I know of several instances where people have been apprehended by police, the "burglars" were carrying a map of which houses or businesses had dogs. These were marked with a red dot or cross. Avoid.

It is a minor reason I have dogs. They also entertain the grand kids.

A story I heard: Wannabe burglar broke in via the roof. Stepped on a possum which immediately sunk the pearly whites into an ankle. The owner found him upon returning from work. Blood on the carpet, a large holed ceiling, intruder laying nursing ankle and broken leg.

Police called, arrest was made after being shown the roofing sheets removed.

This guy fed the possum like a pet after that. Rakes, possums, dogs, secrecy. It don't pay to be a burglar.

16496kms???? That's a long way Wade?

Cheers Marty

Not really Marty. It's about the right distance if he has put in 0E, 0N.

If Wade really was in Syrtis Major it would be more like 60,000,000Km

Can we have the distance algorithm updated for people who want to say they are on the moon or another planet?
