Hi all!

Humayun has inspired me, to to go a further with my processing. My landscapes out of the camera are less than captivating.

This image IMHO is way over processed, well compared to the very bland and boring original. So bland infact I was going to delete it. I thought I would cut my teeth on it and try multiple layers. This is a first for me and only realised how to do it in Gimp tonight.

Because it was a learning curve I decided to go all out.

Layer for plants, water, rocks, luminance and selective sharpening.


In all it was a good few hours of learning multiple layers, I can really see how Humayun's images "POP" now. Smart man.


Anyway thanks for looking. I apologise if this offends anyone, I don't consider it a great image just a learning curve.

You've lost too much details Mitchell, and the water highlights seem blown as well (not sure if it was the PP or the original image was blown). Mind if we see the original?

You know what pleases me about your critique? The fact that I knew that before I posted it, means i'm learning.


Detail was lost, in noise reduction, I wanted the floaters removed from the water there are heaps as you can see.

The original image is good on the fall, yet somewhere in gimp I lost the detail. I need to go back and do another layer and bring the fall back in unblown.

This image is over PP maybe too much for a good critique, I should have spent longer on it, making it better. It at one stage seemed to be heading off into fantasy land, there is even a Gimp supernova in there somewhere.

Here's the original, as you can see I was just having fun with a new skill, obviously in the future I would never use such extreme PP as this.

Edit~ Wadda ya mean David details??? You got tree reflections in the water to the left, turquoise waters to the right, water falls straight ahead... Check the water detail halfway up frame to the right side. Perfect reflections.... Million dollar views!!! That's a desktop background if ever I saw one, maybe one of those oriental flickering electronic wall hangings, where the water seems to flow and it plays bird sounds.

The last one is without the heavy noise reduction.

Good on you for having a go. It's the only way to learn, as you well know.

Can I just say straight up that this image is unsalvagable? In my opinion, the reason for it is that the lighting is far too harsh. If you can, try reshooting, either early in the morning or late in the afternoon. It'll make your job so much easier.

Also, leave the floaters in. They add character to the image.

I'd have to agree with H here - the lighting is too harsh and there is a loss of details. Trust me Mitchell. You can do better than this!

"Trust me Mitchell. You can do better than this!" You don't need to convince me of that. This is by no means a presentable image, as I thought I made relatively clear in the original post. The image was not good to start with and now is totally distroyed. The thing must have 10 layers in it. Now that I have worked out how to layer, I can apply the principals to other images. Like I said before just a learning curve, nothing more.

Yes, and that's good. And I realise that you said that in your original post. I wouldn't destroy it, keep it and in a year or 2 or shorter, you'll reflect on how much you've improved as a photographer.

Local bushland in Pennant Hills. Might be Cumberland state..? Yes it did look beautiful, after about 45minutes of me clearing all the rubbish out.. Cans floating on the water, garbage bags etc. The falls must of had 20 or so bags caught all through them in debree, I had to climb all over it removing them.
