EQ6 hypertune
I don't know if this has been raised in the forums before but has anyone done one of the hypertunes on an EQ6 mount that is available from Deep Space Products.
It looks interesting but pricey.

hi
i have done a hypertune on mine, changed most of the ballbearings, new shims, and superlubed everything.
i bought a video that took me through all steps, and things went ok, only thing is the allenscrews to adjust the worms, they are very cheap, and is easy to round of, so i changed them for new, high quality ones i got from a hardware store.
the result is exellent, movements are silky smooth, and it is even less noicy then it was before.

Yes the hypertune does provide a benefit - only if there are problems with your EQ6 mount in the first place! I got all the necessary info off this site: http://www.beevo.com/rework.htm
I had done one on a 2yo mount (older black model mount) that could not hold alignment for more than 30secs subs and after the hypertuning I could easily do 4mins unguided subs, none of the bearings were changed except being packed with lithium-based grease but the worm-mesh was finely adjusted as well as the spacers replaced
My 2nd EQ6 Pro (newer model in white livery) will be fitted with Aeroquest's 64-tooth transfer/spur-gears for the RA/DEC motors and their S/S replacement worms, bearings for the worm shaft ends are ABEC7 ceramic ones plus thrust bearings to adjust the worm end play - but will probably do this hypertuning during the Chrissie break, and will post results here when done
Cheers
Bill

I did it (but my way.... http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...ad.php?t=43823).
The outcome was smaller PE (by almost 50% smaller) and reduced backlash, but noisier motors (because original gearbox uses plastic helicoidal gear on motor shaft, and mine is brass spur gear.. maybe I needed to apply gooier lubricant here).
Right now I am planning another one, basically I want to get rid of transfer 47-teeth gears (they are adding too much high frequency noise to overall PE) and replacing them with timing belts, and I want all this to be inside the mount (perhaps outside belts are quite OK as per Avandonk's mount but I do not want them exposed to un-intentional abuse).
All this will eventually pave the way to good and reliable guiding, planned for sometimes later.

there is no need to spend money for a new worm wheel, I did the mod and it was not worth it!
The main advantage come from adjusting the worm wheel, as described at deepsky.de, not from the higher quality of the new wheel it self.
If the error of the RA wheel is to bad just swap it with the one in DEC

I am guessing you are right... I think I managed to almost half the problem by careful mesh adjustment.
Nice and smooth PE introduced by worm-wheel stage is not really the problem, it can be straighten up by autoguiding..
The real problem is "noise" in gears.. 47 teeth transfer gears in particular.. +- 2~3 arcsec..

I decided to get a kit and will embark on cleaning and re-lubing in the new year. I'm also contemplating replacing the main RA and DEC bearings (6 roller and 2 taper bearings).
I'm wondering if anyone has a view on the type of lubricant for these bearings as the roller bearings are sealed units and come pre-packed with mineral oil based grease.
Is it worth opening up the bearing seals and re-packing with the synthetic grease recommended on many of the sites that deal with re-lubing an EQ6?

hi
i opened mine, and repacked them with PTFE based superlube grease.
PTFE is very good grease, and i think it is worth it.

Thanks for the response Alfi. What process did you use to clean out the old grease and dry the bearings before re-packing with new grease?

hi
i just opened them, used a rag to dry out the most i could on both sides, then i rotated it a few times to see if any more came out, after that i packed them again with the new grease.

Just followed Peter_4059 and bought the kit to do this hypertune as the mount Im currently using obviously is in need of some tender loving care. Tracks fine but full of fine white powder and crap.
