WO Flattener IV test - NGC2070 quickie

Decided to test out my WO Flattener IV on the ED80 last night. Full moon and light pollution, also thought I'd give some Ha imaging a crack with the DSLR.

This is just a quick test shot, 4x8min subs. Quite happy with the flattened field, but will test some more obviously.

Processing question - how the heck do you guys manage to display and save just the red channel in grayscale? I can't figure it out for the life of me. When I opened the image in PS, I went into the channel mixer and set everything in the G and B channels to zero so only red in the R channel was 100%. The all the stretching and editing was done in R channel only, had G and B turned off even. On screen in PS i see the grayscale image I want to display, but when I save for web it turns all the channels on and the image goes red like below. What do you do? Is it as simple as just converting the image to grayscale after editing?

Here's a greyscale version Troy ... convert in PS to greyscale mode then back to RGB and save as ............

I edited levels etc a little in RGB mode to get this but hard with compressed file.

I wouldn't convert it to greyscale or desaturate in photoshop.. This will save all the data in the G and B channels, which is all noise, into the final image.

Instead, go to the Channels tab, select just the red channel, copy that channel, click, file -> New image, click ok, and then paste the red channel into the new image.

Your data looks fantastic.

Alex.

Thanks guys. Not sure of the correct way of doing it, but I went to channels, right clicked on red channel, duplicated into a new image. It ended up in an alpha layer of a multichannel image. Had to change the mode from multichannel to grayscale, then to rgb 8 bit so I could save as sRGB for web. Reposted in #1 above.

Troy,

That looks freakin' awesome, man. When you get the chance, add a crapload more data to it, make sure you take appropriate calibration frames, and you're up for a ripper.

You're well on your way, mate.

Regards,
Humayun

Good stuff Troy.
Your testing has helped me out too, seeing that the FF4 does not work with the Megrez90(grrr), I thought I'd have to find an FLT owner to sell it to, now I have the option of selling to an ED80 owner, thanks!

Thanks guys. I certainly plan to add more data to this wonderful part of the sky. I quite like the image scale with all that extra action going on around the Tarantula. Lots to look at.

My main goal with the above was to check the field was nice and reasonably flat.

That looks awesome mate. That WO FF seems to do a great job on the ED80. Top shot.
