The LHC experiments- why are they so important?

The LHC is about ready to fire up again.
Higgs bosons, neutralinos and dark matter.
The standard model, supersymmetry (SUSY) and string theory.
This article from NewScientist is a nice overview of the purpose of the LHC experiments and what the results might mean to theoretical physics. An interesting read, especially for those of us who have only a very basic understanding of quantum physics.

Exciting times (unintentional pun),
Rob.
