Of Ghost and Glass - Mark II

An accompanying image to Of Ghost and Glass.

The magnificent Stirling Falls at Milford Sound.

Stirling Falls is nestled at the base of the mountain called Elephant Trunk which faces another mountain called The Lion. At 151 metres in height, these falls are three times the height of Niagara Falls.

In this image, I have presented the base of the falls. The impact of the spray due to the falling water causes the illusion of broken glass on the lake. The prevailing mist adds diffusion to the image.

This is another image where I've double-processed the single RAW file; one processed for the waterfall, and, the other for the surrounding rock face, moss and the lake proper.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
1/100s f/5.6 at 17.0mm iso400

Slightly higher resolution available here.

Comments and critique, most welcome.

Regards,
Humayun

Wow, I like that one H - awesome! Pity you're in Sydney/Canberra, would have been nice to have caught up one day and get some landscape tips from you.

I really have to try this "double processing", It makes a whole heap of sense to me. Will try it this weekend.

This is a great shot!! It rivals the other, if not better IMHO.
The detail is amazing!! Did you get sufficiently saturated for this shot too?

I love the colours, well done my friend!!

Your amazing as usual H.
There must be a lot of thought of locations, objects, light and 100 other things to make all your images work.
Truly a credit to you.

Cheers Kev.

Dave,

Glad you liked this one. I'm really fond of it, myself.

It seems landscape photography is a lone sport, lol. And, in reality, I reckon its the camera that should be providing the tips, and, not me! My thought process is really whatever looks good in a potential 3:2, or 2:3 format in my head, is photographed when the light is right, or just about right.

I suppose there is actually more to it than that, but, it's very hard to put those thoughts down. It's a feeling, I guess.

Mitchell,

Definitely give it a go. It's kind of like the old skool way of doing what HDR attempts to do. I am actually rather ashamed at myself for throwing myself into HDR so much in my earlier work (a lot of it was posted on this forum). It looks plasticy and fake. It should really have stuck to what it was initially designed for -- global illumination in 3D graphics applications. You only have to do a Google search to see the kind of images that are being created: throw a bunch of files into Photomatix, and "mash butans". But, I suppose that's the thing about art, it's all subjective.

I also agree with you, I'm a lot more fonder of this image than the original. I have some more coming soon, too. And, yep, I was drenched.

Mike and Adam,

Thank you, gents!

I'm now planning my next trip out there. I will most likely spend an entire month in Fiordland.

Regards,
Humayun
