You rarely get anything cheap on ebay nowdays, most of the time the punters bid too much, or I suspect the sellers push the prices up with fake bids.

Sellers' market it is then (on ebay). So sell sell sell! I've never sold nothing though. Maybe I should try. I have a lot of unused useful useless junk.

There are bargains to be had for buyers, but luck and persistence have a lot to do with it. I got some real bargains off ebay this year, but I've bid* on 10-30 times as many items as I bought.

*grammar??: I haven't a clue... I checked the dictionary but I'm more confused than before...

maybe a dumb question:

why are canon DSLR's so widely used by astrophotographers? is there something they do that other brands don't? Are they designed with astrophotography in mind? i mean there's plenty of other different types of DSLR's around.. but canon seems to pop up alot when you're looking at astrophoto's. Not that i'm in the market for a DSLR.. i'm still a long way from that.. just asking a question..

El, the answer is simple, the Canon sensor has the lowest noise of any of the current DSLR crop, the 300D had better noise performance than the other brands and was available at a reasonable price long before the others. The 350D and 20D have even better noise performance....

Actually, Phil it is really the sensitivity of the Canon CMos to Red light and in particular HA light that makes them more attractive. The low noise is both present in the Canons and the Nikon D70.

I think that you will find that on CN, there are quite a few Astrophotographers that own and use D70's for their DSO work. There are some features that the Canons don't have that the D70 does have, like Bulb setting.

That said though, Canon images do have a richer colour due to its sensitivity, The DA and rebel series are purpose built also for astrowork.

Anyway, thought I would explain what I thought.

ummm my canon 300D and eos 300 (film) both have bulb feature... that is where you can leave the shutter open for aslong as you want to. i use a shutter release which is on a cable, but i know with the digital you can also get a remote.

Rowena, how long can the shutter be left open for? I think if Canons do have them, they can only be left open for a max of 5 minutes. Whereas, the Nikon can be left open for 30minutes. 5minutes is not really a bulb function it is limited time exposure. Thats whay I said that they have no bulb function. Correct me if I am wrong.

No such 5min limitation on Canons DSLR . You can do 1 hour exposures with bulb if you wish. I have done 10 and 15 minutes ones with no problem.

Regards
Chris

I read on their site severeal months back that this was not possible and that you had to force the camera to do this with software. I am sorry if I got this wrong, but was also informed by others at CN's the same thing.

Paul...I can leave the shutter open on the bulb setting for 99 hours and 99 minutes and 99 seconds in total using the canon cable release....not that I would bother.

We forgive you Paul.

I have a mains supplied thing(not cheap)that runs the camera all night and all day!I also have a TC-80N3 that controls the camera exposures. So theoretically can expose for any length of time I want. And as many times as I want, for as long as I want!
Should explain a few things!

Bert
