Talking New 13mm Nagler

After much umming and ahhing, I finally lashed out on Saturday and grabbed a 13mm T6 Nagler. Got it out for its first run tonight when a very nice clear patch of sky appeared for an hour or so.
Worth every cent. While this is probably the cheapest of the wider field TV eyepieces, it is great value for money. First target was (of course) Omega cent. For 3 years I have read and heard people talk about seeing patterns of stars and dark lanes in this beauty, but all I ever see is a fairly even glow and a few sprinkled stars. Not now, darks lanes criss cross the cluster and it is just stunning in this EP. Similar result with 47tuc. Had a look at Jupiter, could see mottling in both equatorial bands and could see many more minor bands than I have ever seen before.
Glanced at M7 and M6 then cruised that area. Found some globulars (NGC6453 and 6441) nearby. Really pleased with 6453 as it is really faint and I've never picked it up before.
Overall I am very happy with this purchase.
It is as easy and comfortable to use as the 25mm plossl that came with my scope but gives much more power. The field is much flatter than any other EP I own, although I have viewed through a 12mm Nagler with a paracorr which was brilliant. Eye relief is only 12mm, but that is enough to be comfortable and I could use my glasses. From a relative newbies perspective, this all shows you don't have to fork out the $$$ on an Ethos to improve your viewing experience.

Although I'm fairly addicted to astrophotography, I just love to get out my 13mm T6 whenever the need to go visual strikes. I'd read all about Televue widefield eyepieces and the fantastic image scale you get, but its another thing to experience just how much detail you can see with a FOV approaching that of a 25mm plossl !

I also find the 13mmT6 + 2x barlow gives my 6mm Radian a run for its money too.

Glad you're enjoying yours!

Sounds like you really love the 13mm T6! I was so tempted to purchase it, but i already have a 6mm Radian and I settled on a 14mm Explore Scientific eyepiece... maybe tempted to purchase the 13mm T6 to compare

G'Day mate,

I got mine yesterday and was lucky enough to get clear skies to try it out last night.

I looked at a cluster near Scorpio's tail (I forget which one) and it was like I was swimming in the cluster, it was brilliant, way better than the Plossls I had been using.

It's vey sharp and clear almost to the edge, INMHO the 13mm shootout review is spot on with it's assessment of the eyepiece.

Now if can just learn how to steer the darn scope properly....

I wasn't even aware of the review of this EP when I bought it! Just confirms my own thoughts. Was very pleased to see the price I paid at Bintel ($389) was a lot lower than it was when the review was written.

If you are thinking of getting a premium eyepiece, this as a great place to start for collection.

Malcolm

Its an interesting and useful exercise to plot the field of view circles for your favourite eyepieces in your planetarium software of choice. Gives you some idea of just how much you can see with what initially sounds like a high-medium power eyepiece. You're effectively seeing everything zoomed in 2x, but still able to see almost as much as a low power eyepiece because of the wide FOV.

Also convinces me that I must never ever look through an Ethos.....

Congrats!
A wise purchase. The 13mm Nagler is my 'go-to' eyepiece. I haven't once regretted buying it. With a 2x Barlow it makes a great planetary EP or for getting a little more detail in nebulae and clusters.
You'll have many happy hours with it I'm sure.

Yep, I loved my 13mm Nagler and Panoptic eyepieces till I looked through a friends Ethos.
This made me get 17mm ethos.
The TV eyepieces show lots of detail.
One warning, if you look through an Ethos you will want one.

Matt.
