2hr 38min animation of "Birds Impactor" from 22nd July
Hi All,
This is an 18 image animation captured July 22nd from 12:37 to 15:15 UTC. The seeing was variable, averaging approx 6/10. All images are R channel captures of 2,700 frames with the best 700 stacked for each image. This animation represents the best 21,600 of 48,600 frames.
Capturing the R channel meant more data per capture than what is possible when capturing R, G & B channels and provided higher resolution of Anthony's impact region.
South is up and West is to the right, Ganymede is to the left and Europa with it's shadow is to the right.
This animation is a 1.9Mb file

16" F4.5 GEM Newt, Anssen Technologies dual axis drive & drive corrector, Peltier cooled primary, JMI Moto Focus, Orion filter wheel, Astronomik's RGB type II filters, DMK 21AU04 CCD and 3x TV Barlow working at 5.3x
Thanks for looking.
Regards
Trevor

Hi Trevor
That is a beautiful animation, at such a grand image scale! Well done mate, now go to bed and catch up on that sleep deprivation!
Cheers

Thanks Trevor, I haven't seen an estimate of size as yet but I think that many of the SL9 pieces were about 1 km across. From memory this scar may be just a little smaller. I would think the differential rotation combined with the variation in wind speeds further from the equator may cloud the issue a bit, regarding how any particular impact scar will evolve.

Thanks Dennis, I am very pleased with my 3x TV Barlow and the 30mm extension I turned up for it to work at a bit better than 5x. I was, initially, a little concerned at what effect this would have on the image quality, however considering the seeing last night I think the images for this animation came up quite well. Looking forward to what this setup may produce with some good seeing.

Wow. That really is inspiring Trevor.
I'd love to hear a bit more detail on how you prepared this (software etc). MANY hours in front of the screen I suspect. Was Registax used, but what then for the animation? On my to do list to do an extended Jup animation, but wouldn't be anything like this grand scale.

Great animation Trevor. The moon shadow is a great feature to compare the impact mark to.

Thanks Rob, normally I use virtual dub to convert my avi's to bmp's, then I load the bmp's into ninox to crop centre and grade the images. Then load the output file from ninox into Registax V5.
As I had such large files and so many of them, in this instance I just loaded the avi files into Registax. Then in Astra Image Pro, applied LR Deconvolution and a slight curves adjustment. Then in Adobe photoshop CS4 I applied a mid tone adjustment in levels, a small Smart Sharpen adjustment and Despeckle.
The animation was done in PSP V8 using animation shop which always does a good job with animations such as this.
As some of this data was very good I will go back and reprocess the best of it using my usual longer processing routine. When I do that it takes about an hour to process 1 avi.

Thanks Anthony, but it pales into insignificance when compared with your efforts.

Thanks Kal, yes I am very pleased with how sharp and well defined the shadow is.

Wow Trevor!
That is a great job!
I've only just spotted this because there are so many Bird Impact
threads about!
The image scale is fantastic.

Steve

Thanks for the detail on "how its done" too Trevor. I'm still very much at the "stuff it into Registax" stage with AVIs from my ToUcam. Suspected there was a heck of a lot we were taking for granting.

Thanks Lester, looks like some good weather coming through to at least next weekend so we all will be able to capture some descent data on this event.

Thanks, glad you like it, a lot of effort went into producing it.

Thanks Steve, I am pretty happy with the image scale and looking forward to having another go at it with better seeing.

Thanks Rob, when I started out with my ToUcam I used to do it all with Registax as well and at the time was pretty pleased with the result.
I suppose as you get into any field of astro imaging, the more experience you get, the more you find that there is to it. There is a lot that can be done to get that bit more from your data.
