Wow! Great news. Can't wait to see it all It should be a very exciting event, and has been a long-time coming. I just wonder why these haven't been presented before? Did the only guy to know about them die or something after he placed them in storage - and forgot to tell someone else?
There will be the usual detractors of course.

Awesome! I saw the ad on cable the other day and thought 'hey they've found it' but never saw anything in the media. Great news. I hope they take better care of the new corrected masters.
Cheers,
Jason.

There's been several reports on various websites over the last few months that they've been "found", but it always turned out to be a hoax, or at least, incorrect.
I hope it's true this time!

I found the NASA News Release on their website:-
http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2009...llo_tapes.html
Quote:
WASHINGTON -- NASA will hold a media briefing at 11 a.m. EDT on Thursday, July 16, at the Newseum in Washington to release greatly improved video imagery from the July 1969 live broadcast of the Apollo 11 moonwalk.
The release will feature 15 key moments from Neil Armstrong's and Buzz Aldrin's historic moonwalk using what is believed to be the best available broadcast-format copies of the lunar excursion, some of which had been locked away for nearly 40 years. The initial video released Thursday is part of a comprehensive Apollo 11 moonwalk restoration project expected to be completed by the fall.

I thought the tapes that were supposedly lost and found at UWA were data tapes on moondust, not video at all. The data tapes are old magnetic 7-track tapes and they needed to find a player for them and the only one they could find was broken and needed repair and its taken this long to repair it etc. I was listening to a podcast about it last night.

Be patient my beating heart!
"On Tuesday, NASA spokesman Mark Hess would not confirm toFoxNews.com that the new footage came from the lost tapes, admitting only that some of it had indeed come from Australia. Instead, he directed the media and the public to wait until Thursday's official press conference, to be held at 11 a.m. EDT at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.'All will be revealed', Hess said."

Phil Plait makes an interesting comment:-
"Still, there is value to this. For example, in the last few seconds of the montage you can see (I think) Aldrin moving across the lunar surface as he and Armstrong plant the flag. As he skips by, you can see the lunar regolith (the finely ground dust on the surface) scudding up from his boot. On Earth, that dust would billow up in the air, and travel perhaps a few centimeters. In the footage you can clearly see the dust moves on a ballistic path, barely arcing at all and moving a meter or two. Clearly this was filmed in an airless, low-gravity environment. Incredible!"

Unfortunately not the lost tapes we were hoping for
Unfortunately it appears these are not the lost master tapes that were taken
at Parkes but digitally enhanced restorations of the best available tapes.
I asked John Sarkissian at Parkes -
"Are the video tapes being reported by the media they were claimed to be found
in a basement of a Perth university indeed the missing Parkes Apollo 11 tapes?"
And John kindly informs me -
"No, they're different. The tapes in Perth are data recordings of a lunar
dust experiment deployed by the Apollo 11, 12, 14 and 15 missions.
The tapes we're looking for were erased in the 1970's and early 1980's for
re-use in other missions.
However, we uncovered evidence of a secondary recording at Parkes that
contain the higher quality video of the moonwalk. Until we have evidence to
the contrary, we believe that still exist, we just don't know where.
While there is hope, the search will continue."
Many thanks to John. Nevertheless, the digitally enhanced images that have been
released are a major improvement when compared to the un-enhanced images.
Best regards
Gary Kopff
