At last a guided DS image: M8

Finally obtained all the right gear. Yesterday was the first time EVER I managed to get the guiding to work. Unable to contain my joy when I saw all the stars remain round after 5mins of exposure. Yeeeeesss! This is a big milestone for me and its from my suburban Sydney backyard!! If this is a dream I don't want to wake up. Bring them on DSOs!!

Wow, that's so impressive!
Congrat's on your first image.
I know nothing of astrophotography but I feel your excitement.
I'd certainly be over the moon if I could take a pic like that.
Maybe one day, when I win tattslotto.

Tell me cookie, is that correct? A 480mm refractor as a guidescope???
Is that diameter? Sounds whopping!

Thanks Molly for sharing my excitement. It was a 3" refractor with 480mm focal length.

Great to hear you have your guiding up and running Vincent, I know how we felt with our first guided image.
You have some good detail in this image. Well done.

The background does look a little green on our monitors, maybe some of this is due to area light pollution and there appears to be coma present for if you look at the stars in the corners of the image they are all pointing away from the center.
We had this when we were using our 8" Newt and corrected the problem with an MPCC coma corrector.
Hope the above comments help.

David

That is great news Vincent and a very nice image. Your images will really start to improve now that you have guiding up and running.

Like what David has said the background is a little too green. Watch the levels and make sure that they are balanced.

Great colours and great detail for only 9 minutes of exposures. Well done.

Thanks everyone for your encouragements & comments. Yes David I should look into the coma corrector further down the track or heavily cropping my images. But for now I am pretty happy to push on with the current setup

Hello Vincent,

for a first guided image that is truly amazing, it looks like you've been imaging for years. Keep up the good work and have fun.

Great effort for just 9mins.
The guiding is working nicely by the looks of it too.
Bit of star elongation at the edges - probably due to the ED80 rather than the guiding. Flattener/Reducer down the track?
Couple of dust motes to the right of the nebula could be sorted out by taking some Flats - easy fix.
We are all greedy consumers of this stuff on IIS Vincent , so more please!!

Doug
