How Many JJJ Hottest 100 songs are in your CD/IPOD/MP3 collection?

The recent JJJ Hottest 100 songs of all time http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/hottes...wn/cd_list.htm presents many deeply loved songs but has a big youth factor/bias, that being the nature of the station these days. As many of us are not as young as we used to be I thought it would be interesting to see how many of the songs on the list I own on CD or my IPOD/MP3. As a lover of popular music with a large music collection I realised I'm not too hip any more with only 54 of the songs in my collection. By contrast I have 86 of the 1990 Hottest 100 in the collection. I was a teen in the 80's so anything from the 90's and beyond had to be extra good to make the collection. Interested in others thoughts.

I've only 24 of the songs in my collection.
But there are quite a few on the list that I do like a lot.
If they bought out a compilation album I'd certainly buy it.

Wow, 26! Not many of them are post 1990 though. Of course, the list really reflects the stations demographic, so there's a lot of carp there.

Cheers,
Jason.

Haven't gone through the whole list, but I'd estimate probably 2/3 to 3/4 of the 100 I have. I know I have all of the top 20

@koputai - "the list really reflects the station's demographic" True, it's a survey by a radio station. But the interesting thing, I thought, is that it's a youth radio station and still so many older songs made it. I reckon the target demographic of JJJ is teens and early twenties maybe. They wouldn't have been born, or at least not listening to the songs as they came out and were hits at the time, but obviously do listen to them now.

@toryglen - you'll never be an Aussie with that music taste Not so much on songs you like, but the JBT comment

~35 on CD and ~20-30 I've been meaning to get for years! oops, guess I'll have them when I buy this CD

Troy, I reckon the list shows that JJJ's focus has been miss-guided for all these years and should back-off on it's 'youth' focus and try to get back to it's 'alternative' days. I firmly believe there are far more 20 to 30somethings that listen to the station than they realise.

And not to mention the over 30's (or over 35's ) (actually nearly 40's)

True, I 'discovered' JJJ in the late 80's when I was visiting a building site and heard music I had never heard on a commercial radio station and.... language! No BEEPS! Sure grabbed my teenage attention! haha.
The builder was in his late 40's or early 50's maybe, I had a look at his radio and noted where it was set on the dial.
Found the same spot on my radio that night and have never looked back!

Not a bad list. I've got 73 of em. Strange to see 'A Day in the Life' voted as The Beatles best song ever.

If you have a large collection, I really recommend Mediamonkey to keep it under control.

Ahhhh.... to reminisce about the excitement of first hearing JJJ... I think '88 maybe '89 as it took longer to get to Perth...so fresh....Maynard in the morning, Roy and HG when they were really innovative and the wonderful Ms Catriona Rowntree.....I'd fallen in love with her voice and her charm on the airwaves without even knowing how physically stunning she was too.....I remember the first time I heard Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode on JJJ, holy smoke what a great song, I have to get that ASAP...also Mick Jones from The Clash with his own outfit Big Audio Dynamite.......many others too that were not played on mainstream FM, which to give them their dues had introduced over the previous 10 years Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, Steely Dan amongst others to me.
These days give JJJ a bit of a go but am largely intolerant of hip hop and rap and profanity which reduces their appeal somewhat.

Well, back in my day, sonny, we only had two J's and it was on AM. I didn't hear them start their service by playing a banned song (You Just Like Me 'Cos I'm Good In Bed) but I was listening to them later in '75 - when I could. The underpowered hand-me-down transmitter didn't always get the signal to Wollongong. They put a lot of music on air that no one else would touch - Yes, Floyd, Focus and Split Enz before anyone had heard of them (and when they were really a band worth hearing). By the end of 75 and into 76 the Saturday afternoon show Knude Radio (with a silent k) was mandatory listening.

In 77 I moved to Sydney and Fred Dagg (John Clarke of Clarke and Dawe fame) helped start each day with a smile, or falling off the chair laughing if he was having a good day (the mention of 'Erg Potential' still cracks me up). I also heard the great Bretton folk/folk-rock performer Alan Stivell on JJ and so went and saw him at the Pavlova, thus opening my eyes to a whole new genre.

I don't listen to JJJ any more, I find it's not for me, but all the radio I hear is from Aunty.
