Hey im new + filter question

Ive had my first telescope for about 6 months now and recently recieved a filter set for my birthday.

One of the filters (#80A blue if that makes any difference ) tends to rattle a little when i move it around and i was just wondering if that is necessarily a bad thing.

Thanks,

HiddenDragon.

Well its not necessarily a good thing. Is it possible to isolate the rattle. Is it possible to determine if the filter itself moves within the ring? It maybe a poor fitting filter within its frame.
At the end of the day, if it only rattles when you shake it but is perfectly fine when you put it in the focuser, then its probably going to be ok. Just check to make sure there are no obvious cracks around the edges.

Hi and welcome to icinspace
Is the glass loose in the frame ,or is it loose when you screw it into the telescope?
If the glass is loose in the frame it shouldn't be any problem, but if the thread is loose then it could come loose and fall out
I hope that helps

If i apply a little more pressure on the ring the rattling stops, and it is the actual filter glass moving inside the ring. I cant see any cracks so hopefully it is ok.

Thanks for the help i was just a little worried as the other filters weren't doing the same.

The thin ring that holds the filter glass in place is probably just loose, easy to fix.

You will see a couple of small nicks in the filter ring, get someone to hold the filter with the ring facing up, then get two very fine pointed implements, something like two safety pins and put then in each nick in the ring and turn clockwise.

However be careful not to put to much pressure on the pins in case they slip out and scratch the filter glass.

The ring is usually threaded.
