DIY scope storage case

Getting close to finishing my latest project, a storage case for the TSA. I just need to fit in some foam blocks to secure the finder scope and accessories. Also could use a lid restraint to stop the lid folding all the way back.

It is mostly 1/4 inch marine ply. I painted it with water based house paint. By a stroke of luck the green is almost a match for the Takahashi green as used on their cast metal parts. It was left over from a job in our front entrance. (British Paints tropical moss).

It is not perfect but definitely better than nothing.

Nice work Andy – it looks like a well crafted case! Room for accessories too, as our gear always seems to grow!

Cheers

Thanks guys.

After spending so much money on a scope it is not always easy to find more money for cases. I looked for a suitable cheap tool box that could be modified but everything was too big or small and in the end I was inspired by others who have posted their efforts on here and Cloudy Nights. I enjoy the woodwork and the time spent is fun time for me though I never seem to have as much time as I would like!

Now I need to make one for the Vixen mount.

Nice job Andy. How did you do the sides? I'm guessing dovetails since I can't see any corner posts in the pics.

Thanks Peter and Narayan

I just used 45 degree mitre butt joints. Dovetails or box jointing would be stronger but I think they are overkill for something light and simple like this. On the other hand with a varnished finish they would look fantastic.

Andy, that is a fantastic case
I'm currently putting together a simple case for my dob out of Al angle & sealed mdf panels, it'll be no-where near as neat as yours though

Yes a very nice looking case there Andy.

You've prompted me to get out in the shed now and put something together for my recently purchased Meade LX90 8" rather than just sitting it in foam in one of those large plastic containers.
That looks very professional, thanks for showing it.

Ken.

Thanks Adam and Ken

The main thing is that it protects the contents and works within budget. You can hide all kinds of stuff-ups with a coat of paint!

Very nice job there.
I also lack the Know-How to work with timber.
I wish I could make something like that.

Well done.
