Jeep trade in

With Chrysler seeming to go through the hoops i reckon its about time to say goodbye to the Cherokee in case parts get more harder to source.

Next Sat drive to Adelaide to pick up my next 4x4 a gxl landcruiser wagon then take the 8 seater seats out to make more room to move the ole 16" scope around with more room to spare.

Toyota i hope seems a safer bet at the moment compared to chrysler.

Why so big? A Rav4 or Xtrail or even a Prado would be overkill but why such a big Leviathon? A 4X4 ute with a canopy would do.

Was it a KJ that you had Kev? Have you looked at the WJ CRD? Daimler will still support them over here, so I'm pretty sure you're OK for spares and service for some time to come. I loved my WJ - and it was brilliant in every way. It was capable, had a Merc drivetrain and engine and was super reliable. I miss it dearly.

The Toyota is a fine vehicle though, and you really can't go wrong.

Or perhaps trading up. I have just purchased a brand new WH Grand Cherokee CRD Ltd and love it........so much so, last week I bought the Ltd Cherokee CRD (slightly smaller) for my wife. Down here in the Peninsula, they just opened another new Jeeep dealership and I actually spoke with the owner from whom I have purchased Nissan's and Merc's before......

He said that Jeep spare parts, a majority of the parts are sourced by both Chrysler/Daimler and Mercedes and supply usually exceed 12-15 years......my uncle had a Jeep Grand Cherokee back in mid 80's and when Jeep left Oz shores for over 10 years, he could still source parts readily......I wouldnt worry too much......maybe upgrade to a new or demo new WH

Hi Chris yes it is a KJ and it has been an awesome car but the appeal of the landcruiser is an eyeopener for me.

I do hope jeep keep being made as mine owed me nothing.

And as Ivan mentioned about the leviathan well i love the 4x4s and now its like aperture fever going bigger.

Kev, if you haven't set your decision in concrete, take a diesel Prado for a test drive, the ride and noise levels are superb, but the best part is the fuel economy.

I have the diesel model, gets around 9.4 L/100Km on average, the best I've done is 8.2l/100Km on my return journey from Astrofest a couple of years ago. The 180 litre fuel capacity isn't too shabby either (except at fill up time...).

One of my Uncles is a retired director of Chrysler. They will not be going anywhere in Australia and are expanding. You won't have any trouble getting parts.
I love our V8 Grand cherokee as it has a 3500kg towing capacity and with the big Hemi V8 it can tow our 2.5 tonne caravan like a light weight camper trailer.
They are excellent 4wd's and if you are worried about fuel economy then the CRD diesel is the way to go and uses only about 10ltr 100 combined with nearly the same level of performance as the 5.7ltr V8 and can out accellerate the 4.7 V8 and has Merc running gear in them.

But then again if I did not get a grand Cherokee I would have gone with a V8 Landcruiser, they are excellent as well and have 3.5 tonne towing capacity as well.
My wife loves the smaller feel of the Grand cherokee as its her car but I do like those Landcruisers.

Sorry Phil the deals all signed its being fitted on monday with a 3500 towbar then on thursday getting a series 15 TJM polished alloy roo bar fitted.

Drive away on Saturday...

Yes you will like that cruiser.
I wish I could convince my wife to drive one but she like the Jeep atm.
You will love it.
Did you go V8 or diesel.

Hi Kev,

Way to go.
I have owned two Toyota Cruisers (desiel). The second was a GXL.
When it came to travelling in inclement weather it handled superbly.

I sold it only because I used the work truck and we had three cars between the two of us.

A dream to drive on long distances. It tows like there's nothing behind.
Ya' made a good choice.

Phil i used to drive the 4.2 turbo diesel ST Patrol it was a work car and in my opinion it was an underpowered heap of rubbish, But the 3 ltr model was great.

The Missus wont touch it cause she lives 300ks away in Mildura her commitments keep her there whilst i live up here.

But then comes the lad on the L plates he has a smile from ear to ear and all i can do is look stupid at him.

If i lived in the city i would not look at it but here is a different story.

We have just bought (1 month ago) a newer troopie to replace our old one. The old one is a 1980 HJ47 and we've had it for 25 years. Parting with it will be heart-wrenching enough - I used to joke that one doesn't sell old troopies, they have to be surgically removed - and we didn't even contemplate not getting another one. In the late 80s we spent 5 years on the road in it. We tool it 'everywhere' and never let us down. Since then it's only outing have been our annual holidays and for the last 6-7 years it taken us through the Victorian high country with no problems.

Unfortunately we are finding that we aren't as tough as we used to be and a long day in the truck knocks us about too much. It's also slow and we want to return to central Aust sometime soon. And then there is the eclipse in Cairns. I'll have long service leave by then and I'd like to see the top end again and catch the eclipse on the way home.

The new one is a 2002 model with 200,000km on it. It's in overall good nick, gets along (turbo), is comfortable (Stratos suspension seats) and the electric winch is easier on the old body than the hand winch. We want to add a few things to it - water tank, cargo barrier, storage compartments, good sound system ... Then I hope we enjoy it for at least a decade, perhaps two.

The woopie (as we call troopies) will last forever nothing wrong them.
