I was presented with clear skies on Friday allowing me to have another chance at imaging. Conditions were good and there was no moon to contend with.
I really wanted to have a second attempt at M16. As it had almost been a year since the last time I had imaged it. Nothing spectacular but the coolish temperatures and calm conditions really helped.
Imaged with C8 F/6.3 on EQ6 Pro, Pulseguided through EQMOD with DMK21 and PHD, Canon 450D @ ISO1600, 26 x 5 minute exposures, stacked in DSS and processed in PS CS4.
I am pleased with the result, however I think it is time for an upgrade.
Let's hook up for an imaging session along with trick and Tilt and bloodhound31 and toryglenboy and whoever else wants to come along. I'm pining to do some imaging.
Nice Matty! 26x5 min subs!! Geez thats a marathon effort! Looks very nice, great colour...
Thanks Alex. The extra exposures really helped make processing much easier.

Thanks Humayun.
I am on holidays starting after next week. So let's definitely get together. We just need the weather to clear up.

I totally agree with you. There's never a bad time for an upgrade.

Thanks Mike. I still amazed what a simple setup can produce.

Thanks Clive,
I am starting to outgrow my C8 for imaging. Although it is a great scope, I am at a point where I don't think it can produce higher res images. I'd love to upgrade my camera as well though I don't think I am ready yet.
I am really interesting in the new GSO RC's and with the release of the 10". It looks like that's where I'm heading with an upgrade.
Just stunning Matty! I love the gentle luminosity as you look into it, and the colour is beautiful.
I wonder if ISO 400 (or even 800) might help contain the stars a bit? Jerry Lodriguss says it doesn't really affect the detail you capture unless:
1. ISO too high and you get pixels "overflowing"
2. ISO too low and you never get a pixel to "light"
There are likely two things causing the stars to look a little bloated... The image was taken with an SCT... The SCT's optical design doesn't really lend itself to producing very tight star images... Thats not to say they can't do it, just that its not what they designed to do. If you look at spot diagrams for comon SCT's and say, a good APO refractor or a CDK/RC telescope and that will tell you the story...
Also, During processing, using power stretching or DDP can avoid bloating the stars... watching the upper end of your curves can also help greatly...
Less than great seeing can also cause it.... A mixture of two of the above or all three could definitely be the cause of the slightly bloated stars..
Detail throughout the nebula looks good, indicating focus was spot on...
