Simple CD/DVD spectroscope

Hi,

since this new forum is for spectroscopy also, I thought
I might share a great little project that I made with my 8y/o
boy ages ago

Here is a page I made about it.
http://mywebsite.bigpond.com/astrost...ectroscope.htm

You can make the cardboard one in about half an hour.
A good, clean sliver of a DVD can split the sodium lines
easily on a sodium vapour streetlight.

You can also improve them by making a better knife edge slit
with two stanley knife blades and adjusting the viewing angle
to select either 1st order or 2nd order spectra.

I had a look at that project after seeing it on another thread.

One wet weekend I was going to have a go at it, but ended up making one with a sector of a DVD inside two cut and glued 35mm film canisters with a (pretty rough) slit cut into one of the lids.
