Hello Group,

Apologies for the cross posting

The first of SBIG's ST4000's showed up in Oz just After Christmas and I was curious to see how the camera held up.

Hey, nothing special.... a 5 minute self guided exposure taken between cloud breaks from light polluted Sydney skies. ..(Dark subtracked, no flats...there are a few gradients that precluded stretching the data, AP155 @F5.2)

It does show this system has pretty good S/N performance and FOV similar to DSLR APS sized chips

No argument from me! ... 5 minutes is a pretty lame effort..... more curiosity than anything else on my part

Then there is this crappy Sydney weather...it literally rained 20 minutes after I took the M42 data

Are there anymore images from this particular camera? I am interesting in purchasing one of these cameras, but want to see more images if I can.

Just had a quick google around Paul, there are a few other users presenting their work online. While a logical step up from a DSLR, your purchase will depend on motives. Personally, if I were you, I'd seriously be considering mono with filters so you can play in a different arena.

The ST4000XCM is my next upgrade I think... I like the idea of OSC, larger CCD than my ST9E, and have grown very accustomed to self guiding...

Peter - What kind of money are we looking at to buy one of these bad boys in Australia...

Carefull Alex, Jase speaks wisely, do some homework. There is an ST10XME going 'round these parts for a good price........

Sorry Alex, I agree with Fred and Jase. Even at the expense of superseding the ST9, if you are going bigger, go mono. Even if you kept the ST9, the CFW8a that accompanies the said ST10 would fit both. Heck, you could then ditch the soon to arrive 30D, as RGB with the ST10 would be all but as good.

Yeah the ST10 results do speak for themselves really, and being the highest QE of all the SBIG cameras has to be a good thing too The thing is, RGB/LRGB/NB imaging is great, and gives you the best possible resolution in your image, however it is SO time consuming... between capturing all the data you need, and all the extra processing work to get a nice image.. Its just a lot of work... I suppose thats just me being lazy and I should snap out of it!

I'm definitely not buying a 5k+ camera just yet.. But its on the list of things to do...
