Restoration project

I've acquired a Nairne (of London) Gregorian telescope that needs a bit of work. The scope should winging its way to Australia and hopefully arrive in the next week or so.

I've got absolutely no experience in how one might restore such a scope. Is there anyone out there who has experience in antique scope restorations? If so would you be willing to provide me with advice when I start this little project.

I know for certain that the stand is missing (its a table top model) so I will have to get one made to the original design (I've got some images off the web of what they looked like).

Apart from that its all a bit of a mystery I'm afraid

Any help would be appreciated.

It's an interesting optical design. I really like the focusing mechanism.

Nairne

Yes, apparently the focus is changed by moving the secondary - nice and simple and no mirror flop My RCOS moves the secondary mirror to achieve fine focus - nothing new under the sun.

Apparently all that stuff works OK. The lacquer seems to have have worn through in places on mine and as I understand it, its bad form to "polish" the old lacquer off, true?

Still any new stand I get made will not match the patina of the tube - probably not a real problem
