works doin it again...

you know, its been damn fine handing out hundreds of library cards over the part few months that have my image plastered all over the front of them... and yet a little surreal too.

for quite some time now I have been... well not really advertising but displaying some of my bird and insect photos on the library's "multiscreen" so that they come up in a sequence on the 3 large plasma TVs we use for advertising stuff in the building. I have been getting some really nice ego boosting feedback about how "beautiful they are", etc but thats about it and thats ok for me cause its all i wanted. Recently the Councils publishing officer came to see me though and said she wanted to use some of my images on council publications and also to make a DVD of local wildlife, plants, scenery and architecture to send out to all the residents of the area with the councils newsletter. while Council wont pay me for it I do get full photo credit . so I have given her 90 to go on.

while i'd love to be paid for it I am pretty pleased that once again my photos are getting out there enmasse to the public and this time to more than just library users.

one day i'll make money from this i guess but untill then, well I'll just put up with thousands of people seeing my work

I think that's pretty poor David.
Yes, there is some Kudos from seeing your works published with your name alongside, but some additional contribution in the form of cash should be made. Although you have allowed the council to publish your photos, make sure you retain copyright. Who knows, some great publishing house might ask you next time.

From http://www.copyright.org.au/publications/G011.pdf

----start extract----
- Protection is free and automatic

- There is no system of registration for copyright protection in Australia.
- Copyright protection does not depend upon
registration, publication, a copyright notice, or any other procedure—the protection is free and automatic.

- A photograph is protected by copyright automatically from the moment it is taken.

- As a result of international treaties such as the Berne Convention, most foreign copyright owners are protected in
Australia, and Australian copyright owners are protected in most other countries. For more information, see our
information sheet Copyright protection in other countries.

Well done, David. Explain to the Council that while recognition is nice, money helps with equipment needed to continue providing these pictures.

Good on ya Ving. I remember similar situations where I decided for many reasons it was best to give free usage of the images, it's all for the best as you say.

It's a shame people don't value photographs much, not enough to offer money straight out anyway! But it works both ways... I thought I valued photographs until I recently paid a pro for some portrait photo's of my fiance and I, and realised I had no idea just how much photo's are apparently worth!

Well done Ving!

Do we get to see which images were chosen for the cards?

Cheers Petra d.

Are we still talking about how we'll be able to say we knew you, but not in the biblical sense..?

Congratulations, anyway. Maybe next time they'll give you a bonus.

Cheers,

Brian.

PS I've just used the bar code on your library card to clear out your bank account.

I reckon it's great your pic is being used...regardless of payment.

Yes, it would be nice to receive some form of compensation, but this instance should be viewed as something you can list on a CV (or whatever) as you continue to compile photo credits on your journey toward perhaps one day being paid for your images, if that's your ultimate aim.

I've contributed many pics...even articles...for publications, for which no payment was received nor asked for.

Sometimes it's just nice that they made it out into the daylight, beyond my camera's memory card.

I think the moment i have to to pics because i am getting paid to do so will be the same moment i lose interest in photography.

Maybe David should change his name to Brian?!?!

Congrats David, although money its nice (particularly with an expensive hobby), to share your hobby and passions with others and to see people enjoying things that you do gives you a great feeling of happiness (I guess a bit like all the great advice available here on IIS for free!!).
