Dollar up. Time to buy OS

The Aussie dollar has just hit $US0.70. Do we buy now or do we wait to see if it goes higher?

Hi Geoff,

As I have often stated before, if one could reliably predict which way the
dollar would shift, it would not take long to become the richest individual
that has ever lived.

If anyone is absolutely sure of which way it will go, please don't bother
posting here but please telephone me immediately on 02 9457 9049.

The US Dollar is weakening because with the issue of new US Govt bonds, it
is effectively as if the US is printing more money.

The Australia Dollar often strengthens in step with the global economy,
largely owing to strengthening commodity prices. However, signs of that
are few and far between at the moment.

If anything the Greenback may strengthen slightly again on some renewed
optimism with regards their strategy for rescuing the US financial sector.

According to one ComSec analyst quoted on ABC Radio this morning,
the Aussie in his opinion has probably risen too much too quickly in the last
few days as is likely to only get as high as the mid-seventies before dropping
again slightly.

These things are always a gamble.

Best Regards

Gary

The Aussie dollar isnt up, the USD is down. This helps only if you are buying from the US.

Weekend financial review had a good piece on this last weekend, going over all the info above. American dollar is weak and Aussie falls in a heap as global economies fall and demand for our commodity exports falls.

While our dollar may strengthen a bit as things pick up, American dollar probably has a lot further to go up. Most analyts predicting therefore med-long term Aussie of about 55cents (or even less) against America.

So, if you've got the money, next few months may well be time to buy with prices 30% dearer in long run.

(assuming the analysts know what they're talking about, which is questionable as also noted above....)

Not necessarily...

Maybe OK if you want to buy stuff which was made in the US, but if looking at goods from China or Japan it is not nearly so rosy. THE $US may be falling, but the yen and the yuan are not.

Latest technical analysis from Colin Twiggs:

Quote:
Australian Dollar

The Australian dollar dipped briefly below the first line of support against the greenback, at the February high of $0.6850, before recovering to signal a healthy up-trend. Expect a test of resistance at $0.7300. Another rate cut by the RBA, however, would impede further progress. In the long term, failure of $0.60 now appears unlikely, but would target the 2001 lows between $0.48 and $0.50. Breakout above $0.7300 would offer a target of the September high of $0.8500 (calculated as
0.7250 + [ 0.7250 - 0.6000 ]).

I think much of that has to do with when they bought the stock Duncan. Still they are in the business to make a profit.

Too true Duncan . At least we still have the option to buy from the US even if the AU$ is only worth 70 cents or so. Find the bit you want both here and in the US, dial in currency converter, add shipping then compare costs. I think you might be pleasently suprised.
