Stupid Computers

Stupid computers. My computers, my wife’s mobile and my sister’s satellite receiver decided that DS ended and have changed time without asking for confirmation.

its not really the computers fault .. the changeing of the clocks was moved by a week, compared to last year. that caused the problem

There is a patch that can be downloaded through updates that fixes it

Karl,
My computer often does it wants . . .
It makes me wait while it's busy doing who knows what. It makes me wait even longer when it's having a nap.
It will lock up in the middle of an important work and tell me I'll have to "force quit" to break up with it. And of course, It won't give me back my work. Then it tells me to go and complain to Microsoft if I don't like it.
Don't ever give total control to a machine. They are heartless despots!
My sympathies, Rob.

i usually find computers are only as smart as the operator. If its taking forever when multi-tasking, then maybe some RAM, or check the virtual memory settings.

I hate computers aswell. I really think they do their darndest to slash ones life span in half ala creating high blood pressure, stress etc.

I'm sure my blood is not the only one that boils to steam when the ubiquitious error message or "page cannot be displayed" pops up. Not to mention taking thousands of lifetimes to load, crashing just when your finishing a huge task and whatnot.

It is important to keep your computers regularly updated - if you have windows installed then make sure you turn on automatic updates.

The fact that the patch to correct for daylight savings was not installed is a good indication to me that the computer is highly vulnerable to worms and viruses as it won't have the latest patches installed.

No offence Kal, but this is probably the worse advice i have ever heard given.

The fact that the time was wrong gives absolutley no indication that its open to attack from worms etc. mine wasnt patched, and i have Sophos, Peer Gaurdian, and a whole host of other stuff on my main box, its locked up tighter than a drum. Regarding patches, any IT professional will tell you, downloading patches to windows immediately is not great advice. i would wait, wait and see what reports come back on new patches, its my experience that patches, especially those that just say "a patch to fix a security vulnerablility" or similar, can quite often cause more trouble then they are worth, as invariably things that use a connection to a backend source get fubbar'd, many a time i have seen these patches installed that stuff up an SQL connection etc. Another one was the Microsoft UAA Hi-Def sound patch, that wiped out sound on almost all PC's with a Realtek Sound chipset.

I would far rather pick what patches i wanted or installed, than give carte blanche to Microsoft to just come down the magic wires and install any damn thing they wanted.

Hey Robh,
I read your post and with out seeing the problem first hand it sounds that you may have a number of trojens and various other infections.

I use AVG free and used to change fire walls from time to time. That doesn't appear necessary any more. AVG updates daily and I have very little if any trouble. AVG is available to download. Just google it.

Whatever protection devices you use it needs to be updated at least once a week. There are those puter vandals out there. Vandals who get by a victim's protection and perform nasty things to their software; makes them feel powerful.

They study how to get by the latest virus busters or protection.

I had a clever infection once. It erased all protection off my system. Mc-Afee, Dr. Norton and whatever, name it, it was gone.

I had a virus buster that was hardly known. It did the job on the virus and I reinstalled and all was well again.

So what Kal (Andrew) posted was really good advice. He does know what He is talking about.

Hey Duncan,
I was surprised by your response. I mean to give only positive feedback to help. I try not to put anyone down.

I have read a number of your posts and I believe you have a lot to contribute to the forum. I don't wish anything to become personal.

If I have stepped on your toes, it was inadvertent and I therefore apologise.
I'd like the posts to continue amicably, I trust you would like the same.

relax fella, you dont have anything to apologise for, i do, i just read your last line of your last post, "So what Kal (Andrew) posted was really good advice. He does know what He is talking about" as a really polite way of saying "Yeah ignore Duncan, he doesnt know what he is talking about" but then again, i should learn to stop being so sensitive about things

its all good

I think Duncan has a point about updates. We have a mixed Mac and PC environment at work and automatic updates are turned off on everything. We always ask our Mac and PC gurus before installing anything like that. We have had problems with updates causing conflicts with applications and drivers, especially in a complex network like ours. Keeping Firefox as the browser and AVG free (or something similar) has virtually eliminated our virus and trojan problems. Anything that tries to get in is picked up on the fly. Giving Outlook Express the flick is also good, because it has security issues and can corrupt attachments (the dreaded .dat files).

I've just returned after a few hours of business and found you've insulted my computer. I always thought it was smarter than I was. Take it back!
All in good jest. Thanks for the advice.

No problems for Apple customers :)

3 macs & iPhone, no problems.

At work the PC's were all over the place, the calendar appointments in Outlook were screwed up too.

It's the people who buy MS Windows who are stupid, not the computers.

Maybe if you did, they would think you were a dedicated enthusiastic employee. You know, probably more cans of UDL's per week.... or a larger storage area / garage for all those extra telescopes you are probably been receiving!

If it were me turning up, I'd be able to use it to fix the Mad Cow !! !

Granted for someone who knows a bit about IT your pick and choose method may be appropriate. Unfortunately, the majority of users out there won't have the depth of knowledge, nor the desire, to individually pick and choose patches. It is in this circumstance that you will find two classes of people - one class which has automatic updates enabled and a regularly patched machine removing vulnerabilities, and another class of people with unpatched computers. I'm sure you can guess which class of computer users are the ones that I always see with problems

I'm sure you can now understand why my advice is not the " the worse advice i have ever heard given"
