Honestly.

There is a perfectly simple explanation.
First you need to take into concideration that the photo is taken in daylight and they are obviously not using the scope.
Secondly, they are in the middle of a desert like environment where there is a real risk of getting sand and dust blown all over the place.
Therefore they have tilted the scope down so all that dust and sand will not settle on the mirror.

I'll leave it up to someone wiser than me to explain about those other things hanging off the scope.

Jeez Jeanette. I'm shocked and dissapointed that you didn't know that those "things" hanging off the side are what made this a "planetary spectrum analyser". Will had just finished taking a reading by looking at a special spot on the mount.

Being just a dull housewife and part time checkout chick I wouldn't know about that sort of thing.

Maybe some of the boys from the Spectroscopy thread would be able to enlighten us as to how this particular setup works.

If you can build an inter-planetry space craft why would you need a telescope in the first place? As a kid I always used to wonder how every planet they crash landed on had a breathable atmosphere. I also wondered as they were traveling to the nearest star (alpha centuri) why were there planets in the first place and where did the light come from?

I loved this show as a kid. The movie remake a few years ago wasn't that bad either.
