Seems like a truly amazing place. I am most intrigued at the 4th image, love the reflection of the vaulted ceiling disappearing into the background.
Has that area been partially flooded and is the reflection in water. Looking closely around the edge of the reflection there seems to be salt crystals creeping up the walls.
Must have been a most memorable trip.
Regards
Trevor

It's a great place isn't it! I looked through there in 1998. Didn't take many photos because I was using slow Velvia transparency film (50 asa) which struggled in the low light. Like Glen our guide didn't speak english, but my wife is Polish so I had a personal translator!
Great shots man! Almost got a HDR quality to them. I was born in Warsaw in Poland and have been back to visit twice since, once in 2004 and again last year. Both times I also visited Krakow and Wieliczka. The 2nd time more for the benefit of my fiance who had never been overseas, but I still loved it.
It's quite amazing down there, especially to think that it was started in the 13th century! Well before steam or electricity. Also, the majority of the carvings were done by the actual miners who worked there, it wasn't like they hired sculptors to go down there and do it. The carving was a coping mechanism the miners used to help deal with the appalling conditions, thats why religious and pagan spiritual themes feature a lot. The guide said that about one in ten people that worked there before the industrial revolution were either crippled or killed in a mining accident.
Cheers, man. It is a beautiful place. I only had a short stay in Krakow, and, it was either a day trip out to Auschwitz or Wieliczka. I'll do the former another time.

The tour guide I had was so serious looking, and had a very thick accent, kind of like Russian women in James Bond movies (and the like). She was really dry, but, had a wicked sense of humour. She timed her puns and jokes to perfection.

Trevor,
The area has undergone flooding (several times, I believe). You're absolutely right, that is salt crystals around the edges. People actually get married down there, if I'm not mistaken. How cool.

Kev,
Cheers, mate. And, you're right, the second picture really reminds me of something out of the original Quake.

vespine,
Thanks! They've almost got an HDR (tonemapped) quality to them because they are all tonemapped. The fact that you said that they almost look HDR, means that I pulled off what I wanted -- to make you question the image(s).
It is pretty amazing to think that it was started about 800 years ago.
It's so hard to fathom that they dug for 300km at a depth of 330 metres. Insane.
Interesting statistic, too.
