BHS Public Lecture Series - Lecture 1
Hi all,
The ANU Black Hole Society is holding its first public lecture for 2009. This one is special because it's being jointly organised by the Canberra branch of the Australian Institude of Physics. The topic is fitting for our society - it's on black holes. Details are as follows:

Title: Black holes at the LHC?
Guest Speaker: Dr. Elizabeth Winstanley
Abstract: Brane world models in string theory suggest that our universe is a slice, or "brane", of a higher-dimensional space-time. One consequence of these models is that copious numbers of mini black holes may be formed by collisions at the LHC. In this talk we will review aspects of the formation and subsequent evaporation of these mini-black holes, and discuss why these black holes will not swallow up the entire Earth.
About Dr. Elizabeth Winstanley: Dr. Elizabeth Winstanley was educated at the University of Oxford, where she studied for a BA in Mathematics and DPhil in Theoretical Physics. After four years as a Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford University, she has been at the University of Sheffield in the UK since 2000, where she is now Professor of Mathematical Physics. Her research interests cover classical and quantum black holes, and in her spare time she enjoys watching cricket and rugby league.
This public lecture is free. Everyone is encouraged to come along.
