M42 Core in HaRGB

Hi Guys

Thought Id attempt this rare object in proper RGB . Well, HaRGB, that gets more detail.

The core looks washed out, but thats the way it is, all the samples I could find were the same.

Although its very bright, the extended neb is quite dim.

M42 Orion Nebula Core in HaRGB
HaRGB Ha 3nm 3hrs bin1; RGB 45mins each bin2
Ha 10min and 1min subs, RGB 5min and 30sec subs
Taken on a Meade 12" LX200R OTA, G11, ST10XME, at f6.7

Looks very nice Fred.. A lot more viewable than the SHO shot!

if you take a look at the hubble image of M42, the core looks much the same as that image of yours... Thats gotta mean something.

Plagiarism!!!!!!

Looks great Fred. That's a phenomenally-tight FOV. You don't see this perspective often, so I can only go on HST photography too, and there is definitely a comparison to be made. Nice!

Chris, agreed, the view sure is tight in this image... about 10 arc min tighter at each edge than my attempt

Gee, thanks Alex, Chris, im flattered on references to HST .

Guiding wasnt so tight (= far too much time in PS).

Actually, apart from star bloom, the 5min 3nm Ha subs were fine by themselves for both the core and neb, a supprise on hearing all the grief about the need for multiple exposure times for M42. Goes to show the value of 16bit Astrocams and narrow Ha .

I found 8min Ha subs with my QHY8 only just burned the core... but the QHY8 is a lot less sensitive than an ST10, and 13nm is a far cry from 3nm

I had to touch up my stars in my close up too fred Turned out ok in both our cases..

Thanks Alex, Greg and Paul

Alex, 8 mins is a long exposure ?? (despite sensitivity etc), If that burnt the core, did you take shorter exposures too ?.

I see a lot of burnt cores, I dont get it, short exposures are easier than long ones, I dont know why anyone who can do layer masks puts up with a burnt core, just keep doing shorter and shorter exposures until it doesnt (just for the core) .

I must say, for M42, wide field is more attractive generally

Fred - Wash your mouth out with dettol after that comment! want a wider field? do a mosaic!

And yes, I took shorter subs to bring the core back.. a few @ 1 minute and a few @ 30sec... this tamed it down nicely...

Mmmmmm ... RGB!! I've just had the bandages taken off my eyes from the temporary blindness caused by your last, lets say, non-RGB version. But this one is sweet Fred - a very cool, detailed and easy-on-the-eyes image!

Cheers, Marcus

Hi fred, This one is a bit more to my taste than your last although like you, I think M42 is a much better target for a wider field. Still the clarity of the shot makes it a real winner. Thanks for posting this comparison image.

Alex, yes yes of course, mozaic, thats what I ment

Thanks Frank, glad you liked it

Cheers Marcus, that NB is starting to look not so clever now. Easy on the eyes, well, I had too, restor some credbility

Doug, thanks, yes, the core by its self is not so attractive, iether its pushed and too agressive, or a little washed out.

Thanks Gary, yep its M42, the only neb you can centre on in the finder scope .

Cheers Deeno, yes I ran out, couldnt avoid it anymore
