What do you do when the moon nears full?
Hi,
The weather on the sunshine coast has been shocking for quite some time. I have my list of objects I want to photograph but I can see the sky clearing just as we hit the full moon knowing my luck. What do people do for that period of maybe a week/2weeks proir to and following the full moon.My gear tends to go into early retirement for this period and was wondering if there are things to do that I just don't realise.

Image with Narrowband filters, the moon is then next to irellevent, I do it all the time  .

Fred, Can you give me some examples of the filters you use. I shoot through a Williams Optics Flt 110 triplet with a Canon 400d unmodified.

Yep, I'm the same as Fred. Just keep on imaging in narrowband. I use 13nm Astronomiks.

Take pics of the Moon and anything bright enough that moonlight doesn't bother too much.

Mark. Well, I was being a bit flippent there (but you did ask ;-), NB filters for DSLRs arnt cheap (large), bintel has the EOS clip in ones, but itll cost a few hundred for a set. Exposure times get really long too, so yr mount needs to be up for it.

I usually concentrate on non-astronomy hobbies/chores, spending more time with family, etc. I take it as an opportunity to have a break.
But... if I do some astronomy I usually do things like trying to improve polar alignment, PEC, autoguiding, or such. Things which take time to do but don't need dark skies.

I use the scope to look at the MOON! and try and spot the Lunar Rover and descent stages
Closest astronomical object to earth, not counting the ISS and it always puts on a good show, changes from night to night.
Bugger this DSO astrophoto stuff, havent got enough money for all that....................YET!

Is it bad that on first reading I though you meant that whispering sweet nothings in her ear might convince her to let you buy nb filters?

Well if it is clear when there is a Full Moon out. I usually try to image in a part of the sky opposite the Moon. It usually works but you will probably have to cut down your exposure time with a DSLR.
Or as an alternative, I give up and dream about NB filters and a CCD camera.

Jazza, that's real bad!
My considered opinion of most of the replies on this thread is that there are a lot of sad/bad cases out there in the IIS community!
Mind you, I'm a lucky man, a gorgeous wife and dark skies!
PS, already got that NB filter!
