C/2007 N3 Lulin - 29/1/09

Got another chance at this comet. Wanted to go a bit deeper than my previous image.

Captured 16 x 3-1/2 minute subs at ISO 800. Usual setup. Canon 450D through C8 F/6.3.

It's tail is easier to spot with the extra exposures. There is one tail at 11 o'clock and another much dimmer one at around 5 o'clock. Not sure if it is a second tail but its quite hard to make it out.

Will put up a higher res if anyone's interested.

It's been clear most of this week but i've been too tired to get up for it.. plus I couldn't be bothered polar aligning. Lazy I know.

Very nice Matt. Tails stand out nicely and smooth result.
Has been a real bugger to image here as it fogs over midnight with all this humidity. Managed to get some subs this morning as the fog lifted a little before twilight.

Hi Matty,

Another top job,definitely two tails and for me, the tail at 5 o'clock seems the more prominent of the two, I think the star trail in the tail at 11 o'clock contributes to making that tail appear more prominent than it really is, it sort of draws the eye. The nucleus looks really great and is very well defined.

Trevor, I do agree with you. The 5 o'clock tail seems a litte more prominent than the other. Which was not the case in my last image.

I am interested to know why this comet has two tails? Anyone know?

Nice high res. shot there.
I think it has 2 tails as the dust has mass so spreads out in a sheet, where the gas is pushed back by the sol;ar wind
