Burning problems

Now this one has me beat. Here is the guts of it. If I try to copy a CD from one CD player to my DVD burner, it gets to about 23% then locks up, Cant do diddly have to reboot, and one trashed disk. Ok went to my computer tech, he reckons he checked the DVD burner and no problems, burn ok in another computer with same criteria. His suggestion, software probs, reformat and start again. Ok did that today, brand new virgin system XP Pro with SP2 (plus all updates) and virtually nothing else, still the same problem. Now the odd thing is I can burn data no problems, but to copy a CD either using drive to drive or Burner singularly, ie using a CD image, I still get the lockup.
(Exactly as it was before the reformat). Oh yeah using Nero that came with my DVD burner (LG)
Now do any of you tech guru's have any ideas on this one. It has to be software related, but I have no idea where to start. Oh yeah and not going to the tech at $60/hr

Can you copy the CD to the computer first, rather than straight from one to the other?

Some burners don't like being a slave apparently. Althoug I cant' say i've had any probelms with burners as slave.
Have a look at the setting for your IDE controller. The channel that your DVD burner is on should be set to DMA mode not PIO. They should all proably be DMA anyway.

If any of that doesn't help. It wouldn't hurt to see if it burns properly connected to an IDE port on it's own.

nero only let you burn a few cd's then it wont burn until you pay $20.00 US after you pay that you will be right to go. Better still save cd's to wma and then burn it using nero.

What Mojo said about drives not liking to be slaves could be relevant. You could rejumper the LG to master and the CD to slave if it's not already so. (although My LG is running happily as a slave). It may also be what you're trying to copy that's the problem, does it happen with all CD's or only one in particular? If it's a copy protected audio disk you'll need something like exact audio copy to sucessfully copy it. I know of no restrictions on burning with the nero versions that come bundled with burners. You say that the problem still happens if you copy the disk using only the DVD burner, so it sounds to me like a compatibility issue or maybe just settings. BTW I have an LG DVD burner(slave) and Nero combination together with an Asus CD burner(master) and have no problems. It may also be a bug in your Nero version. My nero (express 6) version is 6.3.1.12 although I note that the latest version is 6.6.0.3 and is available for download. If none of the above sort out your problem, it would be worth a google search on LG DVD burner copying problems.

I tried swapping the DVD burner into my other computer with no problems at all. Used the CD burner out of that one in this computer, once again no problems. It seems that the DVD burner just wont work on this computer in copy mode. My tech mate seems to think it might be a problem with my mobo, cant see why if the CD burner works ok. The saga continues.

Have you run the latest Motherboard drivers...give us the M/board make and model number and see what I can find for you.

Also as Phil said get a newer copy of the Nero or just a different edition and give that a try.

I use Nero version 6.6.0.0 Ultra Edition and found some other version didn't always work...its about trail and error....

Its intresting how your burner always fails at 23%. Like others have said it could be Master/Slave related. Have you also tried using a diffrent cable? The newer IDE cables shoud be used i think they are the 80pin ones.

Also can/have you tried burning from an image of the CD with only the DVD burner connected to the mobo on that chanel?

When you say you have tested it in another PC, was it by itself. Did it burn ok from Image or from cd to cd.

Regards

The mobo is a MSI 645E max-u
The DVD burner works fine in my other computer (a much older computer at that), it does everything it is supposed to. Also the CD burner from the other computer works fine in this one. Only thing the DVD burner will perform in this computer is to burn data, as far as backing up and copying CD's, this is where it all turns pear shaped.
Only thing I havent done is to change it from a master to slave on this computer, I suppose that may be an option, but cannot see what difference it would make.

Cheers

Peter

Here's the driver's for your motherboard....I would download the SIS IDE drivers from the MSI web site first up....from here.

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/suppor...UID=352&kind=1

Then I would change Nero version for sure.

Dont play around with Bios downloads unless you know what your doing.....use the automatic update that comes as a utility software with your motherboard.

I got $20 on its your nero version thats the problem...

Striker, agreed Nero can be a pain sometimes. I was also thinking it could be copy protection.

Thanks Tony, I downloaded the latest drivers and installed them, voila all working. You beauty, many thanks for this. Got to admit I went to the MSI site today and downloaded the latest AGP drivers, but could not see/find the IDE drivers, they appear to have fixed the problem..Yeah....
