GSO eyepieces: 3 vs 5-element design

I guess this is a follow-up to the post by Nexus6 about the 30mm Superview.

http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/s...ad.php?t=39024

I have a Stellarvue 70ED and a Bintel FMC 26mm (3-element) eyepiece. I can reach focus with a standard 2" star diagonal but not with my William Optics 2" 45-degree erecting diagonal. Obviously the additional light path within the erecting prism is to blame.

Given the post about the 30mm Superview (5-element) it seems that this design requires more out focus than the 3-element eyepieces. I'm wondering if anyone has both eyepieces and has done (or can do) a comparison of the out focus required. I reckon I need another 10-15mm to reach focus with my erecting diagonal, which I'd like to be able to use with a cheap (and lightweight) 2" eyepiece (i.e. I don't want to use my 35mm Panoptic cos this seriously unbalances the scope.

Obviously I can visit Bintel with my scope to test out the 30mm for myself, but I won't be able to do this for another two weeks. Anyone know the answer???

Cheers

Morton

P.S. Happy New Year to all!
