Comments/advice on smiley face photo

I have just started playing with a canon 40D/100-400 lens/tripod. I took this 2 nights ago with the following settings;

F 4.5, shutter speed 2 seconds, iso 800, fl 100mm - using multisegment metering.

Not sure about the following

best aperture - need to stop down at this distance or get the best out of the lens stopped down
I should have bracketed - moon is too bright but would the cloud detail disappear
as yet no editing - any tips to buff it up a bit
size is reduced for this post
i used time release - will be getting a remote cable for christmas

any comments or tips for the future would be appreciated

cheers,

rasimus
