golden moon rise

Hi All

I haven't got my observatory set up at my new place yet but my location is great for viewing moonrise. I took a couple of shots on 12th and 13th Dec across the valley that lies before me. The first was taken with Canon 350D plus Canon FD 70-210mm F4 lens. The second was taken with Canon 350D on William Optics FLT110 F7 refractor.

The skies here are so dark when there is no moon around I can't wait to get a permanent setup again so I can take advantage of them

Thanks Mike .... I am really lucky to have found this place.

I have two south facing windows upstairs that allow me to look at the LMC and SMC without stepping outside .... awesome sight !

My kitchen window gives me 180 degree unobstructed views to the east.

Lounge room downstairs and bedroom windows upstairs face north.

Before moonrise last night there were no clouds and the sky was velvet black with inumerable sparkling stars ....... ...... sorry for raving, I've only been here two weeks and it still blows me away.

Nice Moon Steve, but a much nicer Valley you will do wonders with a horizon like that.

I hope to Leon .... the top of the valley in the shot is around 2-3kms away so the small amount of light from the dwellings over there isn't going to be a problem either.

Just got to do some levelling for slabs and rebuild my obs Matty. I'm up here alone so I will have to wait 'till someone comes to visit to give me a hand with lifting walls and roof etc. I'll use my old observatory shed to begin with and maybe build a new one if the need arises .... early days.

Cheers Cookie, it is a great spot to be sure ! Even my lady appreciates why I chose the place now that she has seen the night sky here ... she didn't realize there were so many stars and she was amazed to be able to see two neighbouring galaxies LMC and SMC .

Top pics Steve, congrats on the new location looks great..... I witnessed a wonderful moonrise at the same time whilst fishing with some workmates in mangroves south of Karratha, always a great sight

Could you fill me in on how you attached a FD lens to the 350D? I thought there were problems with the length from the back of the lens to the focal plane when fitting FD lenses in the EOS cameras.

I bought a Bower EOS to FD adapter some time ago when I bought the 350D. I found it on Ebay from memory. There are other brands as well as far as I know. The only thing is that you have to operate the lens fully manual i.e. no auto aperture or shutter etc. Here is Ebay search link .........

Wow! Beautiful shots and an enviable location. Some people have all the luck! The first image nicely captures the colours of the "Belt of Venus".
