Smile Astronomy at School

Today, Dad (ken)(ballarat dragons) came up to our school and taught us some astronomy.

But the best part of the day was that he brang his scope along too.

He taught us (class) how a reflector scope works and how the different eyepeices magnify, also taught us never to look at the sun without the right filter. We learnt how far things are away in space, and all the kids looked through the scope and dad showed us the mirrors and showed us how the curved mirror brings the light together at the eyepiece and
how the eyepice magnifies it.

The only thing we could look at was a tree about a kilometer away and we could see each leaf on the tree. The kids were pretty amazed. He showed us lots of pictures of space on a DVD (cool).

Even though I knew the answers to the questions dad asked us he wouldn't let me answer (except once). pretty funny really.

It was a good day. all the kids went wow when they saw dads scope. Our teacher asked if he would come back next week and teach us some more and dad said yes. I'm excited and my friends will understand now why I like it so much.

You Got a cool dad there Harry! I am glad that you weren't embarrassed by him, its easy for us dads to do that you you kids. Especially to say something you don't want your mates to know.

Who got more out of it today, the class or your dad?

That is what good science is, not the answers, but good questions.

Hehehe! I'm on the net using the lappy! First time I've used it for net. The monitor certainly takes some getting used to.

Harry, it was a pleasure going to your school today. I had fun and your classmates were very well behaved. I know I can say all this to your face but I thought you might get a kick out of reading it in your thread!!

Pity it was cloudy or we could've looked at the Moon. Hopefully next week.

Bert, the lappy certainly made it easier. I had it sitting on an Air conditioner right next to the scope! One hand controlling the video controls in the lappy and the other controlling the scope.

Thanks Davo,

When they are not mucking around having fun as all kids should, they can hold their own in an adult conversation. Good kids and proud parents!

no spamming, just like mike is not allowed to spam kate's threads, you are not allowed to spam you young fella's one.

what reminded me of how well they converse, was by simply reading this thread and the interaction that ensued.

He ain't too bad for a 9 year old! He is teaching the kids at school about astronomy, that's why the teacher asked me to go there. So they could see and use the BIG scope he is always talking about.

Of course I'll brag about him, he's my boy

nothing like giving your kids a bit of knowledge so they can show off at school. Beckie isnt interested at all in astronomy but every now and then she'll hear something at school that she thinks isnt right and she'll come home to get the right answer from me

the next day she shoots the other person down in flames.... teenage girls, they arent having fun unless its at someone elses expense. I'll never understand that
