I've never downloaded a movie using the "movie on demand" online distribution method, but I can list some of the pitfalls. The most likely one is that the "on demand" distribution may not be available in Australia. Alot of the time you will be restricted to using this feature based on your location, so this is something that you will have to look into. A second pitfall is that you will most likely only be allowed to watch what you download for a limited time, not sure of what that is though. The third pitfall is that you will probably have to watch it on your pc, they will most likely prevent the download from being burned to a storage media to watch on your proper home cinema setup.

The advantage is that it will be cheaper than buying the DVD/blueray.

Maybe someone with some actual experience of using the "on demand" download distribution method will comment more accurately.

I forgot to mention the "how and where"

That would be from the official site: http://www.mongolmovie.com/

Apparently there's a small executable called utorrent.exe that you install on your PC. You then go to an index website, you could guess a name like torrentportal.com (just a wild guess of course) then search for the name of the non-copyrighted material that you want. The index site will find a small file called a torrent. You save this torrent to your PC, then double click the file when it's on your PC (not on the website). utorrent then starts up and downloads the content to your PC for use at your leisure. Beware that a 90 minute home movie can be anywhere from 400MB to 1.5GB in size, so it takes a while.
Apparently.

Cheers,
Jason.

Thank you Jason for sharing your imaginary thoughts of how things could be in the world... I look forward to the day when such wonderful things you can call into your mind will exist in reality.

You are not into fermented mares milk by any chance.

Thanks very much for taking the time.

iTunes + AppleTV

The future is now, if you are a mac user. I've done it the legal way several times - both rented movies and bought episodes of TV shows from the iTunes Music Store via my AppleTV.

It works well over a good ADSL2 connection (our connection is a pretty reliable 3-5 Mbps) - there is a short delay - maybe 5-10 minutes - from ordering to being able to play while it buffers enough data to ensure it plays smoothly.

The video looks pretty good on a 42" screen and its a painless experience, very easy to do in typical Apple fashion. One of the advantages of being a Mac household.

However I guess most of the IIS users are PC types and hence won't have access to this.

Let's not discuss any illegal ways of downloading copyright content, please.
Otherwise the thread or the offending posts will have to be removed.

Point well taken, I'd best delete mine at least.

I dont want to do anything illegal Mike that is why I asked... I hear snipets of news that there is a problem surrounding all this but have never worried to find out more because I never really was interested in downloads...unless it is about Mongols or gravity.

Alex if you can find a mate who is a Mac user and has a .Mac account, ask him to show you want available on the iTMS in the way of movies and TV shows. It has only ben available here for a few months, the selection isn't huge yet, though it is starting to look reasonably attractive as the TV & radio stations begin to learn its an easy way to deliver content.

Good point icey

Changed my first post to show that torrenting is a valid and legal method of obtaining content. Of course like anything, some people may use it for nefarious pursuits, but torrenting is a great way of sharing legally copied material.

Cheers,
Jason.

Not only for Macs

You don't have to use a Mac to use the Apple Store to purchase content. You can use iTunes on your PC, with or without an AppleTV unit. Personally I'm waiting for the AppleTV to have an integrated tuner, then I'll buy one.

Cheers,
Jason.

Thanks.
A day of war at least the morning as I said.
Didnt not take any prize my opponent showed but disappeared leaving a lawyer to fight in his stead...he lost..but they want to fight another day.
Then to the land titles office ..it is terrible that you need a lawyer to fill in a form ... The day reminded me why I gave law away, so much crap and folk who cant find their keys to help....but met an old mate (old best mate) he and I started law together and he showed me his office ..so that was real nice.

I only know one guy with an apple and he lives further into the bush than me... but I will look him up.

Thanks to everyone and the help here.
