Sometimes you win

Needed a new set of tyres on my little car - close to minimum tread. Went to see my mates at Bob Jane who supplied the previous set and have been looking after them for me with regular servicing - except the last 14 months when I've been too busy with stuff. We double-checked our records - 125,000km from that previous set - and around 4 years. Yokohamas! I had a new set of Yokohamas put on immediately. New tread pattern, but all I want is loooooooooooooooooooooooong life!

(Bob Jane man not happy - we'll be out of business he says!)

And, in the same time, I've had a hefty morgage running at a fixed rate. A year to go and I'm lots of dollars ahead, compared to variable rate. First year I was behind a bit, but as the morgage rate went up, I smiled. Now it is easing back in time for the morgage to revert to variable rate.

I don't often win!

I love to hear of a friend getting a fair go Eric... we need more good news stories.. I hope others are uplifted by you good fortune.

Now may I offer you some advise that I promise you really works...

Becareful with self talk..you say...I dont often win..with respect I would change that to... I always win because I deserve that result.

I am a great believer in the power of self talk.

Have you noticed a fat person says..everything I eat turns to fat... well of course it will they have told their subconscious what to expect and what to accept..

I lose weight by simply looking in the mirror and saying...my my you really are losing weight...now that is a lie sometimes but the result finally is that I move to that image I suggest to my subconscious... why this works I dont know b ut I do know that it beats any other approach to personal management.

So remebr...you always win because you deserve it.m

I accept the point you make, thanks Alex.

Perhaps I can say that I don't always have a big win! Except, perhaps my wife, my children, my education, my employment history, my family, my friends, my peace of mind, discovering astronomy, being born in Australia............OK, you win!

Yep : Yokohamas are good , I have a set on my Pajero and sware by them .... seem to last a very long time. The set on now have been on for at least 5 years and must have done 70-80,000 km and still have tread on them.

Never has anything but on the Pajero.... very happy with them , though they are a little pricey .... you pay for what you get .... and when on a winner - stick with it.

Previous cars had always had Bridgestones and they weren't bad either , but never as good as these Yokos.

Can't complaign about that price - included balancing too ?

4by tyres tend be a bit more expensive , $250 each last time I recall including balancing . No idea what the replacements are now , not asked , expect maybe a bit more .

Yes, but +$55 for wheel alignment, +$8 disposal fee for old Yokos. My son smiled and told me what his last two tyres cost for his XR6. Your Pajero tyres were cheap by comparison!!

I usually keep the oldies (tell them toss them in the back unless they are well and truely buggered). Got six under the house that still have some tread on them and will do as spares if ever need them. I had a few more only they were used temporarily as spares til no longer roadworthy (had the pajero since 92 when I bought it brand new).

Key to long life is regular rotation, proper inflation pressure, good wheel alignment, regular rebalancing, and stay off the beach (makes the tread disappear astonishingly fast - fishing on the local beaches is pretty ordinary so it's been several years since I did any beach driving).

I had a set of yokohamas once that lasted 28,000k only.

Mind you those ones were a soft compound and I liked to throw the 260z around a bit back in the day

Lots of soft sand beach driving will kill the yokos or anything else except steel tank tracks in no time flat.

My first set of yokos only lasted about 50,000k but I was doing heaps of beach fishing and the sand in the dunes behind Stockton Beach , and along Blacksmiths Beach , and up on Myall Beach is very soft but really erodes the tread. Beach driving was a bit of novalty to me and I really liked it, and at the time there were fish to be had.

I was told at the time 50000km from a set of tyres on a 4WD was good.
