some faint gals

Hi all,
had been some time since I've been able to get out seriously
to do some imaging due to the weather here.

Had some lum on Ngc7424 from last month and in this
last quarter the weather played ball to get some colour.
Ngc7424 needed a heap of luminance to get the final lum
image smooth.
Also did a very interesting star burst galaxy ngc1313 that is
quite faint as well.
Had a heap of gradients that I figure is from light from the
Milky way combined with my towns lights leaking through
my filter wheel.
I generally try to avoid imaging due south for this reason.
Still it could be from a led not being covered properly.

I've recently moved up to a Dell 24" Lcd (2408 true 8bit).
It has been calibrated with a friends spider 2 and I'm
interested to here from those with calibrated monitors
how my black level appears.
I've tagged the jpegs with 1998 instead of srgb 1966
being a wider gamet... not sure how this would look
for every type of monitor.

Here's the link to my front page.

Been enjoying the images from the fence..
Keep em coming team.

All the best
Rich

Hi Rich

Good to hear from you

Both galaxies have your characteristic lovely soft look, not low res just naturally low noise smooth without that plastic look that can arrise from layered convoluted noise reduction. Very interesting structures both of them, 1313 is a real beauty.

Only since you asked and I haven't calibrated my monitor (assuming I need to.?) the colour looks quite muted (even more than I know you usually favour) with almost no red HII visible and little or no star colour present on my monitor..?

Still, two lovely galaxy images ...you should visit us more often .

Mike

Good to see another post Rich!
NGC 1313 is real nice, what a mixed up galaxy! Although my monitor is also not calibrated, the background looks pretty neutral this end.
Very nice..
cheers Gary

Mike and Gaz

Hey Mike,
yeah nice to have at least something to put onto my site. Been a long time.
Been one of those years I guess.
Thanks for giving me the g.o. on how things are looking.
N1313 as you say looks muted colour wise. Same on my mon as well.
I'm just wondering cause I did take the red channel one night when clouds rolled in, getting the G & B the next.
The g & B channels have noticeably more on the galaxy itself.
The limited images I've seen on this object appear to show the galaxy almost all blue. And then other images have been done in narrow band as well as standard rgb. Perhaps this was to reveal more of the older stars/ areas that could be shrouded by reflection... who knows. As you say the tell tale is in the redder stars to the periphery are a little off.
Any way good to know things look ok.
With this res of 1920 x 1200 on my monitor, my little chip is just that, little!!
Think it's time for an upgrade to fill the screen.
Definately!!
Have to wait till near the end of the year to build some funds up.

Thanks Gaza for taking a peek and commenting.
good to know where I stand on how things are looking on other folks screens.
Yes, the info on Ngc1313 is pretty interesting.
It sure is an anomally.
Have never worried about this galaxy before, so it was good to see it captured and thus read about it.

Thanks guys, nice to be back, but alas the weather has gone phsycotic here so who knows how long it will be again.

I'm always taking a peek here though so am not too far away.

All the best for now
Rich

Rich,
Will be blunt, but these aren't up to your usual top quality work. Really lacking colour saturation which gives them a lethargic feel in my opinion. Its fine to process in argb1998, but when posting images for the web, convert them to srgb1966. Only a handful of monitors support the argb1998 gamut range - 99.6% only support srgb1966 spec. Where argb1998 comes into its own is when you intend to print your images. Printing RIPs do a better job of translating argb to cmyk, though I've also had great success with srgb printing to a RIP. I think your black levels aren't too bad and in all seriousness, you've got some acquired some lovely detail, but the lack of colour saturation really doesn't bring these two targets to the forefront. Perhaps a little contrast boost would may also help. Maybe a repro is in order. Some info on colour spaces can be found here - http://www.babelcolor.com/download/A...r%20spaces.pdf

Good to see you back. Don't leave it for too long. (People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones).

Cheers

Nice,
I had a very quick shot at 1313 myself but scrapped the result, it's a challenge to image, you've done well!
I agree that one my monitor too it looks like a bit more saturation or contrast would look better, the background sky looks a wee bit grayer than I personally prefer it but I know different people like it different shades.
well done mate

Thanks Jase, this is what I need!
Still can't get my head around the LCD after processing with a CRT for a long while.
I generally bring my untagged rgb's into PS, convert to Adobe RGB 1998 add lum then when I'm happy, convert it to sRGB, but not this time... don't ask me.
Yep things look under saturated.

Native res on this thing is so full on, my meager h916 images barely fill up the screen in PS so I'm squinting.
Might get the crt out for processing in future, well till I get a handle on the LCD.
