New Toy - Orion Starshhot Pro - First Light

Hi All
I had my first foray last night with the new SSPRO cam. I wanted to "move up" from the DSI's to a cooled, large format cam without paying too much.

An interesting experience 1st time out. Everything is bigger, heavier and takes longer. I managed to get M17 with 5x300sec RAW subs on the ED80.

I've had to put it up on my site as the files are too big http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/calleja/. and I've included an original scale version for comparison.

A big minus that I hadn't considered was processing. Each file is 36Mb and my dual core with 2GB of RAM is very very slow. Capture is OK though.

Take a look and tell me what you think. Its always fun to get out with a new toy!!

I've updated the site with an image of M8 - similar specs to the Swan.

Well Dan there is nothing wrong with that one, very nice capture with your first attempt of a new device.

It seems to have a very rich, deep colour about it and has plenty of depth, nice going.

Good job Dan and good choice of camera, even if I do say so myself. I've had mine for 3 or 4 weeks now and it performs flawlessly.

The files sure do come down big but I have had little if any lag on my laptop stacking with Maxim and I have been using between 6 and 15 frames to date. My laptop is certainly not dual core either. What software are you running for your capture and stacking?

Thanks Leon
The SSPro seems to capture the reds (HA) better than the DSI which always seemed a little pastel-like

I'm using the nobbled version of Maxim that it comes with, though I'm waiting to get the new driver for Nebulosity to see if that works any better.
