M16/M17 @ 200mm f4

Hi all,
A real rough quickie from tonight - clouds, aeroplane lights 'n all.
Clouds spoiled my new SMC attempt, so I aimed for the zenith so as not to come away empty handed so to speak!

Canon 40D (modded)
Canon 70-200mm f4L lens, 200mm @ f4
Skywatcher Synscan EQ5 mount
Autoguided with PHD

8x300sec, iso800
Stacked in Images Plus using "Min Max Exclude Average"
Tweaked in PS.

Higher Res (for what it's worth!)...

Thanks for looking
Cheers, Night Night!!!
Doug

That's excellent Doug, I like the panorama look, did you crop it to be that shape?

Yes Mike, cropped to include the colourfull bits!
Was quite impressed with the GoTo function on the mount - it put M16 bang in the middle of the cameras' FOV, although the crop loses that fact!
Still, nice to have something working as it should for a change
Cheers
Doug

Your having fun with this lens arent you Doug !!! And were all the better for it. I really like these widefield shots you come up with ... so much so that I have investigated a similar lens ... little ****s are near the price of a small scope !!!! ... guess thats what they are really.

Thanks for entertaining me yet again

Am I just entertainment to you Jeff - I feel used!!!

Just kidding mate...the L lenses are a bit pricey, but the 70-200mm f4L probably represents the best 'bang for buck' at the price point. I got mine 2nd hand for $650. They are sharp to the edge of the field (no need to crop in many cases) and colour correction is excellent - little APOs!!

Very nicely done Doug. I might try that shot myself with the 135 and see if I can get the Lagoon in as well, you've managed the Triffid so it can't be too far away.

Was that a plane or two satellites side by side? You might want to try a Median combine (it takes a lot longer) but it will get rid of those pesky light trails.

Not too sure of the cause, assumed a plane - thanks for the processing tip, I'll file that one for later use

Nice one Doug. Nearly missed the Triffid over to the right. Love those wide fields.

Are you guys sure that the object on the left is the Triffid!!??

On my star map the Triffid would lie to the right off M17 in the pic...

You're right Doug. Definitely not the Triffid. What was I thinking? It seems part of the nebula associated with the cluster NGC6604. Sure someone will know. Looks interesting. Might try and image it tonight.

I think I'll go and hide under a bed with a star atlas and a torch until I know my way around the sky a bit better. You are perfectly right Doug, there is no way that is the Triffid. At the risk of embarrassing myself again it looks likely to be NGC6604 and Sh2-054. http://paginas.terra.com.br/arte/ast...e/ngc6604.html

Beautiful wide field of the Eagle and the Swan. That lens is a craker. Sharp right across the field.

Hi Doug,

Here's an image from the DSS files of the nebula I think you picked up.

Thanks Craig - Yep that's the one (Sharpless 2-54)...the little crescent shaped star cluster (NGC 6604) under the nebulous 'blob' in my pic matches yours
Cheers
Doug
