PS Inverse Mask How?

How do I stop areas of an image from reacting to change commands.

I know how to create a mask to make areas of an image react to changes while other areas do not, but I am having a lot of trouble reversing this.

eg: I have orion images and want to ignore the core while curving the rest. I have simply lassoed the core and done an inverse select. But a mask is far more elegent.

Anyone know how?

As far as I can tell you want to adjust the rest of the image and leave one part unaffected.

Try creating a duplicate layer, then create a mask, click on the mask and using black, paint the area you want to remain unaffected.

Then click on the duplicate layer next to the mask and proceed with your image adjustments.

This will leave any area you painted black on the mask unaffected and you can then proceed to combine/flatten your layers.

I think that's what you're after.

If you want to invert a layer mask, simply click on the mask then press Control+I to invert it.

For your situation you might like to duplicate the layer as suggested then invert the mask. This way you have one layer for each area.

Hope this helps.
