History of Amateur Astronomy

As most members will know, next year is the 150th anniversary of the publication of T.W. Webb.s 'Celestial Objects for the Common Telescope'. Here in the UK there are plans to celebrate this event. I live five miles away from the house where T.W.Webb wrote his book, and I am part of a local 'Webb-Share' group of volunteers who have our own celebratory events. In November we are holding a 'Victorian star' party near Hereford at the former home of Henry Cooper Key who with George Henry With of Hereford, ground a number of telescope mirrors.

We also transcribing T.W's letters to his great friend, Arthur C. Ranyard - Secretary of the RAS 1874-80. During my research I have come across the name of Ranyard's brother Herbert, who left UK for Australia, then vanishes from the record as far as I can see. Has any member any information about Herbert Ranyard ? If any member can help we would be pleased to hear from you.

Regards,
John Tittley
