If you can catch it or remotely set your IQ to record, 2:30 (Sydney) today on Animal Planet is the story of Ham, the first chimp into space in a Mercury capsule aboard a Redstone rocket. Looks interesting, and goes through the selection process and training.

It wasn't badly done at all. Quite a lot of Mercury footage that I haven't seen before.
